The Yankees keep on rolling! They took 2 out of 3 from their division rivals, the Rays, this past weekend at Tropicana Field, improving to 27-15.
In game 1, Clarke Schmidt pitched a gem, giving up 0 runs over 6.2 innings, as Tampa Bay was ultimately shut out. Having once struggled against lefties, Schmidt has been using his improved cutter to tie them up inside and get them out. New York needed just 2 runs, off the back of a homer by Anthony Rizzo, to defeat the Rays.
In game 2, New York’s offense continued to struggle, being held to 2 runs or fewer for the 6th time in their past 12 games. Nestor Cortes gave up 4 runs in 5 innings, as he continues to struggle on the road – posting a 6.75 ERA compared to 1.59 at home. Tampa’s #1 and #2 hitters clobbered the Yanks, going 5-7 with 2 homers and 3 doubles, en route to a 7-2 Rays victory.
In game 3, the Yankee bats finally came alive, blasting 5 homers to claim a 10-6 victory. 2 long-balls came off the bat of Jose Trevino, who is having the best start of his career, hitting right under .300. Gleyber Torres, who had been in a 1 for 15 slump over the last 5 games, and RBI-less for the past 8, blasted a 3-run home run to give New York a 9-5 lead in the 8th. New York needs Torres to get going with the bat, as he is off to the worst start of his career.
The Rays produced 6 runs, all coming off the Yankees bullpen, including a grand slam by Jose Siri in the 5th. Starter Luis Gil’s performance was stellar, and the 25-year-old now leads the league in hits per 9 innings with just 4.4. New York began a 3-game series Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins who recently went on a 12-game win streak. They then come home Friday to host the Chicago White Sox.
