The New York Giants forced two early turnovers against the Carolina Panthers, but could not convert either into a touchdown. That is usually a recipe for disaster. But the Giants defense was stingy, fourth-year quarterback Daniel Jones was 22-34 for 176 yards, and threw for a touchdown, and kicker Graham Gano nailed all four field goal attempts, leading Big Blue to a 19-16 win in the home opener at MetLife Stadium over the Carolina Panthers.

Saquon Barkley wasn’t as explosive as he was in week one but he did gain 72 tough and crucial yards on 21 carries. But the star of the game was Gano. He nailed kicks of 56, 51, 33, and 31 yards, the longest being the margin of victory in the fourth quarter.

The Giants defense was stubborn, holding quarterback Baker Mayfield, running back Christian McCaffrey, and the Carolina offense to only 16 points and 275 yards.

It’s early in the season, but the Giants have come through in the clutch, winning the first two games of the 2022 season by a combined four points and are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2016.

What began as a season of uncertainty for the Giants has turned into a season of hope, promise, and an aggressive philosophy from first-year head coach Brian Daboll. Said the head coach after, “good hard fought game. I thought our guys competed well. Thought they were prepared. Had a good week of practice. These are the games in the national football league. There’s certainly a lot of things we need to better. But I’m happy for the guys.” The Giants host the Dallas Cowboys on national television Monday night. Dallas is coming off a win against the Cincinnati Bengals who are without quarterback Dak Prescott who is recovering for thumb surgery on his throwing hand. Prescott is not expected to return for the next 4 weeks. Sports Editor Andrew Rosario contributed to this article.
