Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer convicted of murdering Botham Jean in his own apartment in 2018, is now eligible for parole, six years after the shooting. Guyger’s case, which drew national attention and sparked widespread protests, will go before a parole board on Monday, September 30, the day Jean would have turned 33. Jean’s family, still grappling with the loss, has expressed strong opposition to Guyger’s potential release. “She needs to serve her entire 10-year term,” Allison Jean, Botham’s mother, said. “She caused tremendous pain to my family. Murder of an innocent man in the comfort of his home deserves full justice.”

Guyger, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder, has previously appealed her conviction but lost that appeal two years ago. The shooting occurred after Guyger mistakenly entered Jean’s apartment, believing it was her own, and fatally shot him. At the time, she was off-duty, and her body camera was not recording. As the parole hearing approaches, both support and opposition letters will be considered by the parole board. According to Zerita Hall, a former parole officer and professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, the views of the victim’s family could play a significant role in the board’s decision.

The case remains a deeply emotional one for both the Jean family and the Dallas community. Guyger’s attorneys have yet to comment on her eligibility for parole. Meanwhile, Jean’s family continues to advocate for Guyger to serve her full sentence, emphasizing the severity of her crime. “She murdered an innocent man in his own home,” Allison Jean reiterated, underscoring the pain the family continues to endure and their belief that justice has not yet been fully served.

Police Warn About a ‘Serial Foot-Grabber’ http://philadelphiaobserver.com/police-warn-about-a-serial-foot-grabber/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 09:57:59 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=6239

In the quiet of the Wake Forest University library, a student sat studying when a man reached beneath the table and grabbed her foot. The incident, unsettling in its strangeness, led to the arrest of Christopher Jermaine Deas on the evening of September 1. Deas, a man with no connection to the university, was taken into custody by local authorities and placed in the Forsyth County Detention Center. The university, in a brief statement, acknowledged the arrest and the odd disturbance it had caused on campus.

But this was not an isolated event. Deas’s peculiar obsession with feet has followed him through the years, spanning two decades and multiple campuses across the Carolinas. His name has surfaced in records from the University of North Carolina to Guilford Technical Community College, with charges ranging from trespassing to disorderly conduct. In one incident at the University of South Carolina in 2016, he was arrested for allegedly pinching a woman’s toes as she studied. Each time, the details remain the same—an invasion of personal space in the quietest of places, leaving students rattled and campus officials urging vigilance.

‘He’s Already Dead’: Witness Helps Police Nab Indianapolis Woman Who Left Scene of Fatal Hit-and-Run Because She Had to ‘Pick Up Her Kids from School’ http://philadelphiaobserver.com/hes-already-dead-witness-helps-police-nab-indianapolis-woman-who-left-scene-of-fatal-hit-and-run-because-she-had-to-pick-up-her-kids-from-school/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 14:40:02 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=6128

After a tragic hit-and-run in Indianapolis that killed 18-year-old Cedric “Poppi” McCombs III, the alleged perpetrator drove her usual commute for two days with “a significant amount of blood, tissue, and brain matter” underneath her car, according to court records.

The woman, Eva Marin, allegedly told an eyewitness, “I need to take my kids to school,” and then pulled a U-turn and took off, but not before seeing McCombs lying in the road bleeding with severe head injuries.

Though the death happened in November 2023, Marin was not charged until April 2024 and was booked on July 8, according to court and jail records. Police have not provided an explanation for the gap.

On the morning of Nov. 28, Marin was driving home from her graveyard work shift around 6 a.m., in a black Dodge Charger when she saw “a shadow in the road” and described to police “feeling something hit her vehicle,” an affidavit said.

When she looked back, she saw shoes in the roadway and pulled over behind Zachary Rutherford, a good Samaritan who had stopped after he noticed a body in the street.

Rutherford told police that Marin “looked like she’d been crying,” and as she walked toward McCombs, who was struggling with his last few breaths, she said, “I hope that’s not what I think it is.”

Marin later told police she felt dizzy and nauseous after seeing his extensive head injuries.

Rutherford called 911 and was instructed to perform CPR, but it was too late. As he approached McCombs, he observed him take one final breath — the high school senior died at the scene.

When Rutherford asked Marin, “Did you see who did this?” she allegedly responded, “No, I don’t know. I need to take my kids to school,” and drove away.

Police later questioned if she had called 911 when she got home, she replied, “No, he was already dead, and I didn’t do anything,” according to court documents. She claimed Rutherford told her, “I’ve got this. You can go,” but he adamantly denied this to police, saying the opposite: he tried to get her to stay, but she refused to help McCombs or leave her contact information.

Alabama Police Overwhelmed With ‘Freaknik’ Parties, Some Have Turned Deadly http://philadelphiaobserver.com/alabama-police-overwhelmed-with-freaknik-parties-some-have-turned-deadly/ Fri, 31 May 2024 10:57:08 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=6006

Sheriff and police authorities have been overwhelmed by all the people flooding into Louisville, Alabama, for Freaknik-inspired parties. The rural town of just 600 people saw nearly 1,000 people flood the streets to party recently for one such party. This one turned deadly.

The authorities reported being unprepared for the amount of traffic they received in Louisville.

Lieutenant of the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office, Tracy Reese, said “I talked to the promoter, and she said she sold wristbands, and she knew how many there were. She said it was approximately 900 people, which is a large crowd for us. There aren’t even 900 people who live in Louisville.”

All the buzz and attention surrounding Freaknik started with flyers circulating of a Freaknik-style block party happening in a Louisville open field. It got further reach when details were put out on social media about the party. The posts gained traction with the release of the new Freaknik documentary, but the sheriff of Barbour County had no idea the event was going to happen.

The Louisville Freaknik-style party, unfortunately, got out of hand on its opening night. Kenyatta Snell, 25, was one of the people invited to attend.

Kenyatta’s mother said, “She told me she was going to Freaknik. That’s what they called it.”

The young girl’s mother continued to tell the outlet that she was concerned about all the weapons present when they arrived so she left. “There were too many guns out here for me,” she said.

Unfortunately, the mother would never hear from her daughter again after 9:30 at night.

When Kenyatta and her friends returned to the party in Louisville, a shooting broke out and Kenyatta was tragically killed.

“We scanned the whole property and collected 40 to 50 shell casings,” Lt. Reese revealed. “Based on where we picked up the shell casings, there was a group on this side and a group on this side, and they appeared to just be shooting at each other. We still don’t know what started it.”

Black Autistic Teen Charges at California Police With Gardening Tool, Fatally Shot http://philadelphiaobserver.com/black-autistic-teen-charges-at-california-police-with-gardening-tool-fatally-shot/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 11:16:07 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5787

Ryan Gainer

Nationwide — Ryan Gainer, a 15-year-old Black teen with autism, was fatally shot by deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The incident has once again brought attention to the use of force by police in cases involving mental health crises and its disproportionate impact on African Americans.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Ryan became upset when his parents told him to finish his chores before allowing him to play video games or listen to music. DeWitt Lacy, a civil rights attorney representing Ryan’s family, said the teenager’s reaction led to him breaking glass on the front door. When a family member called 911 for assistance, citing Ryan’s aggressive behavior towards family members and property damage, deputies were dispatched to the scene. The situation escalated when Ryan allegedly charged at an officer with a garden tool, prompting the deputy to fatally shoot him.

Ryan was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lacy criticized the response, stating that the deputies should have used de-escalation techniques, considering Ryan’s known mental health condition. He emphasized that the use of force was unnecessary.

While the sheriff’s department claims to have quickly provided medical aid after the shooting, witnesses dispute this, saying assistance was delayed and that deputies prevented them from helping Ryan. Additionally, the exact cause of his death remains under investigation, with conflicting reports about whether it was due to gunshot wounds or a lack of immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus has defended the deputies’ actions, citing the complexity of such encounters.

“Our social safety net for those experiencing mental illness needs to be strengthened. Our deputies handle seemingly insurmountable calls daily. Most of these calls do not end in violence,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus said.

Wednesday morning, 3 D.C. police officers were shot and a shooter continues to fire gunshots from a home in Southeast D.C., police say.

The officers were there to serve an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals when someone opened fire while the shooting suspect remained barricaded in the house but continued to shoot at police! For hours after law enforcement shut down several city blocks the shooting continues, forcing multiple schools into lockdown. On Valentine’s Day, young children were seen being escorted into their school by the police.

“This remains an active situation, and the individual has continued to fire from that location,” Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith said at a news conference at 10:15 a.m.

“We are asking everyone to please stay out of this location until we are able to apprehend the suspect,” the police chief said.

A Florida Father Is on Dialysis After a Grocery Store Employee Confronted Him About Eating a Piece of Fruit, Called the Police http://philadelphiaobserver.com/a-florida-father-is-on-dialysis-after-a-grocery-store-employee-confronted-him-about-eating-a-piece-of-fruit-called-the-police/ Sun, 18 Feb 2024 16:27:21 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5707

A trip to the grocery store to purchase some fruit resulted in a Florida father being hospitalized after an interaction with police.

Anjelica, Joseph Lee’s daughter, described the incident that led to him being on dialysis and suffering an acute kidney injury, NBC News reported. It happened last month while they were washing clothes at a laundromat in Lakeland, about 36 miles from Tampa.

The 55-year-old went to a nearby Save A Lot store on Jan. 23 to get some bananas because his body was cramping from an infection, Anjelica told NBC. The potassium from the banana helped relieve his symptoms, so he grabbed four of them while in the store.

Anjelica told the outlet that while walking to the register, her father ate one of the bananas but told the cashier that he needed to pay for four. Despite this, another employee, who was white, claimed he was stealing.

Lee denied the accusation, but the employee started to follow him outside, which prompted Anjelica to confront her. According to the report, the employee allegedly said: “People like you and him shouldn’t come into the store if you don’t have money to pay for things.”

California Woman Arrested After Police Officers Discover Mother’s Decapitated Head In Garbage Can http://philadelphiaobserver.com/california-woman-arrested-after-police-officers-discover-mothers-decapitated-head-in-garbage-can/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 08:34:05 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5390

A woman is suspected of killing her mother at their home in Los Angeles. Police authorities stated that the woman allegedly stabbed her mother several times and then slit her throat. The cuts were so severe that her head became detached from her body, leaving the body decapitated.

According to Law & Crime, Kimberly Monique Gonzalez was arrested after police officers arrived at the home around 5 p.m. in El Monte and discovered her mother, Jacqueline Perez, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The possible murder weapon was recovered at the scene.

When police officers appeared at the home, an El Monte police sergeant saw the 25-year-old Gonzalez outside the home covered in blood. She was taken into custody shortly after. She has been charged with one count of murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

“My heart goes out to the family and loved ones who have been shattered by this unimaginable tragedy. The pain and grief they must be experiencing is unimaginable,” District Attorney Gascón said in a written statement. “This was an extraordinarily violent act which has had a profound impact on our community. We are fully committed to seeking justice on behalf of the victim, and our dedicated team will work tirelessly to bring clarity and closure to this heartbreaking case.”

Residents in the area and family members revealed that there was a trail of bloody footprints on the driveway. Decorations were still up from a recent child’s birthday party.

“There’s blood on that side, there’s blood on the floor,” said Hector Manzo, who is a neighbor.

Black Mississippi Woman Discovers the Police Who Were Asked to Help Find Her Son, Were Also Responsible for His Death http://philadelphiaobserver.com/black-mississippi-woman-discovers-the-police-who-were-asked-to-help-find-her-son-were-also-responsible-for-his-death/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 08:31:30 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5387

It’s crazy to have people lie in your face, especially when they act like they are helping you. But that’s what happened between Bettersten Wade and the Jackson Police Department in Mississippi. Here’s the story.

NBC News reported, that in March Wade got into an argument with her 37-year-old son, Dexter Wade. As a result, he left home and went to hang out with a friend. As someone who’s gotten into many heated arguments with my parents, I can relate.

The problem is that after more than a week, Dexter never returned home, which worried Bettersten beyond comprehension. So she did what a lot of people would do, she called local police and reported him missing, according to NBC News. But initially, it wasn’t something she was keen on doing. In 2022, Bettersten’s brother died after being slammed by a Jackson police officer.

After more than 7 months, specifically 172 days, Bettersten did not hear one update about the whereabouts of her son. As any loving mother would be, she figured that she would never learn about her son’s fate. She would call the Jackson Police Department often asking for updates, but the lead investigator would tell her there were no leads, according to NBC News.

This would be acceptable if the Jackson Police Department truly did not know where her son was. But the problem is that they did. In fact, they’ve known since the night Dexter went “missing.”

NBC News reported, through the help of a coroner’s investigator, court records, public documents, and interviews with Dexter’s family, it’s been discovered on the night Dexter left his mom, he was struck by an off-duty Jackson police officer driving an SUV on the interstate.

Despite knowing Dexter’s name, and who his next of kin was, police failed to contact Bettersten, and let his body go unclaimed in the county morgue for months. Since his body went unclaimed, the county buried Dexter’s remains at a penal farm, with other unclaimed bodies, without telling his mother.

Violent White Folks Who Were Taken Into Custody With Loving Care By Police http://philadelphiaobserver.com/violent-white-folks-who-were-taken-into-custody-with-loving-care-by-police/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 13:08:04 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5318 violent white people arrested with tender loving care

It’s tough to reconcile the way the application of certain law enforcement tactics appears to fall along racial lines depending on who the suspect is. In America, when a white man goes on a murderous killing spree, he often lives to tell about it. But when a Black man commits a minor traffic offense, he may lose his life at the hands of the folks paid to protect him.

It was apparently in that same vein that an Oklahoma judge who shot at six cars on more than one occasion during the same day and used his own car as a weapon during a wild road rage episode earlier this month was met with the kind of police response you never hear about when the suspect is Black.

Law & Crime reported that Oklahoma police not only were able to apprehend Judge Brian Noel Lovett of Enid, but they did so without resorting to any force at all despite seeing him in possession of multiple guns after apparently fleeing the scene of the first road rage shooting.

An Oklahoma judge was arrested in Texas for firing a gun at several cars during a road rage incident and slamming his SUV into the back of a woman’s car multiple times. Brian Noel Lovett was released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond. This is what a thug looks like. pic.twitter.com/tRAqw1xQFU

— Fifty Shades of Whey (@davenewworld_2) September 22, 2023

In addition to allegedly shooting at a woman’s car at least five times, Lovett is also accused of ramming the woman’s car multiple times to push her into oncoming traffic. In the face of overwhelming evidence of his guilt, Lovett suggested he did nothing wrong.
