Oregon woman NuBrittany Smith and her mother Tasha are trying to relocate after a white man repeatedly threatened their lives, coming to their suburban Portland apartment and pantomiming a stabbing gesture.

The various incidents have been captured by the Ring camera outside of their front door.

Smith captions the terrifying videos on Instagram, “This man been harassing me since I moved into these apartments.”

The deranged white man wearing drooping black shorts keeps walking up to the door and waving a small knife in his hands. In most of the videos, he whispers profanities before he leaves. In one clip, he says he wants the woman to be whipped, and in another one, he utters something about slavery.

In one video that the woman posted on her social media profile, the bare-chested man warns her mother, “I’ll f–king rape your daughter, b–ch.”

Gwen Berry Felt ‘Set Up’ By Timing Of National Anthem After Being Seen With Back Toward Flag At Pan Am Games http://philadelphiaobserver.com/gwen-berry-felt-set-up-by-timing-of-national-anthem-after-being-seen-with-back-toward-flag-at-pan-am-games/ Fri, 02 Jul 2021 13:49:31 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2548

Activist and Olympic hopeful Gwen Berry turned her back on the flag during an Olympic trail metal ceremony in Oregon, but feels the timing was intentional on the part of organizers. Berry, who won a bronze in a competition for the hammer throw, first turned towards the stands, away from the flag and then draped her t-shirt, which featured the words “Activist Athlete,” over her head in apparent protest.

Things to do this summer FROM A TO Z

The athlete, who has in the past been very vocal about her activism, told the Associated Press that she felt “like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose.”

Anthems aren’t typically played to accompany medal ceremonies at the trials.

USA Track and Field spokeswoman Susan Hazzard told ESPN that “the national anthem was scheduled to play at 5:20 p.m. today. We didn’t wait until the athletes were on the podium for the hammer throw awards. The national anthem is played every day according to a previously published schedule.”

However, that Saturday, the music started at 5:25 p.m.

“They said they were going to play it before we walked out, then they played it when we were out there,” Berry said to ESPN. “But I don’t really want to talk about the anthem because that’s not important. The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has.”

In the summer of 2019, Berry was sanctioned for raising her fist on the podium after winning the Pan-Am games. According to ESPEN, this ruling was instrumental in getting the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to commit to not punishing athletes who use their position to raise awareness for social causes by raising fists or kneeling.

Berry’s third place win in the trials guarantees her a place at the Olympics, however the International Olympic Committee has taken a much different tactic from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, saying instead that it will enforce its Rule 50, which bans demonstrations inside the lines.

It was this rule that caused sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos to be sent home from the Mexico City Games and stripped of their medals in 1968 for raising their fists in a now iconic protest of racial injustice in the US.

Berry’s has remained adamant about using her position to raise awareness about social injustices in the Black community regardless. She maintains that her ultimate goal is larger than just a trip to the Olympics.

Blacks Are Exempt From Mandatory Mask Order in Oregon http://philadelphiaobserver.com/blacks-are-exempt-from-mandatory-mask-order-in-oregon/ Thu, 23 Jul 2020 14:20:50 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=1369

People of color have been exempted from a mandatory mask order in an Oregon county following concerns of racial profiling, the county officials reported. This comes after multiple counties in Oregon implemented face-covering measures to slow the spread of Coronavirus.

“The expressions of racism regarding the exception has created a ripple of fear throughout our communities of color. The very policy meant to protect them, is now making them a target for further discrimination and harassment,” Lincoln County officials said on Wednesday.

The mask order requires people to wear face coverings in public settings, indoors or outdoors. Lincoln, a white-dominated county, is one of the first in the United States exempt Blacks from such requirements in case they fear harassment.

People with disabilities, children under 12, and those with special medical conditions whose breathing can be obstructed by the mask are also exempted from using masks. However, aged 2 to 12 are still encouraged to cover their faces.

Following the announcement of the order, county officials received complaints that the policy targets Black people for harassment and discrimination. This prompted the officials to exempt people of color from the mandatory mask order.

“Racism and racist reactions to Black, indigenous, and people of color wearing face coverings is a reality. And yet we know face coverings can help people stay healthy and save lives. Multnomah County does not tolerate discrimination or violence toward individuals because of their race, ethnicity or identity,” it added.
