TMZ reports the champ took a night off to attend a comedy show at a rooftop bar in Hollywood on Tuesday, March 22.

In a video, Tyson sits calmly at the table with friends before a man rudely disrupts a comedian’s set. Things go left when the man begins approaching Tyson saying, “I’m trying to upgrade my status. All I need is you. All I need is you.”

Eyewitnesses told TMZ the man had challenged Tyson to a fight, but he would not engage. Afterward, patrons in the crowd began instructing the man to leave, which resulted in him pulling a gun from his waist. The video then cuts to the man boldly approaching Tyson’s table again, asking him not to call the police. Instead of giving the man grief for scaring the small crowd, the boxing legend embraced him with a hug.

According to TMZ, the man threatened to shoot the show host, but he never fired his weapon. The outlet also shared the video on Instagram, where commentators commended the boxing champ for keeping his composure.

One person noticed, “Mike didn’t flinch when he pulled the strap.” Another said, “Shiddddd, Mike ain’t move wasn’t bothered at all lol better leave mike alon[e].” A third said, “Always fear the calmest one in the room.”

Trailblazing Legend, Former Florida Rep. Carrie Meek Dies at 95 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/trailblazing-legend-former-florida-rep-carrie-meek-dies-at-95/ Sat, 04 Dec 2021 01:12:29 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3128

Former Florida Rep. Carrie Meek died at age 95 in her Miami home on Sunday. Known for her fiery speeches and trailblazing career, Meek was among the first class of Black Floridians elected to Congress post-Reconstruction.

According to ABC News, her family did not confirm a cause of death, only that she suffered a long illness.

Meek, the youngest of 12 children born to a sharecropper and laundress, won her first Congressional race at 66 years old in 1992 after she ran unopposed by Republican candidates for her Miami-Dade County seat. Before her bid for Congress, Meek was Miami-Dade Community College’s first Black professor, associate dean and assistant to the vice president, a member of Florida’s state House and the first Black woman voted to the state’s senate.

Alcee Hastings and Corrine Brown joined Meek in January 1993 as the first Black Floridians to serve in Congress since 1876 as the state’s districts had been redrawn by the federal courts in accordance with the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

On her first day in Congress, Meek reflected that while her grandmother, a slave on a Georgia farm, could never have dreamed of such an accomplishment, her parents told her that anything was possible.

“They always said the day would come when we would be recognized for our character,” she told The Associated Press in an interview that day.

Legendary ‘Lean On Me’ Singer Bill Withers Dies At 81 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/legendary-lean-on-me-singer-bill-withers-dies-at-81/ Fri, 10 Apr 2020 13:32:34 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=854

Bill Withers, who wrote and sang a string of soulful songs in the 1970s that have stood the test of time, including “ Lean On Me, ” “Lovely Day” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” has died from heart complications, his family said in a statement to The Associated Press. He was 81.

The three-time Grammy Award winner, who withdrew from making music in the mid-1980s, died on Monday in Los Angeles, the statement said. His death comes as the public has drawn inspiration from his music during the coronavirus pandemic, with health care workers, choirs, artists and more posting their own renditions on “Lean on Me” to help get through the difficult times.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,” the family statement read. “As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.“

Withers’ songs during his brief career have become the soundtracks of countless engagements, weddings and backyard parties. They have powerful melodies and perfect grooves melded with a smooth voice that conveys honesty and complex emotions without vocal acrobatics.

“Lean On Me,” a paean to friendship, was performed at the inaugurations of both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me” are among Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“He’s the last African-American Everyman,” musician and band leader Questlove told Rolling Stone in 2015. “Bill Withers is the closest thing black people have to a Bruce Springsteen.”
