Viral Embrace: Michael Jordan, LeBron James Have a Moment at the NBA All-Star Game https://philadelphiaobserver.com/viral-embrace-michael-jordan-lebron-james-have-a-moment-at-the-nba-all-star-game/ Tue, 22 Feb 2022 07:13:49 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3470

*Two generations of GOATness shared an embrace at the NBA All-Star Game Sunday evening and instantly went viral, before one of them went on to go viral again for his last second shot to win the game … on his hometown court.

After the presentation of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Michael Jordan and LeBron James had a moment.  Jordan was the last player introduced, surprising many by flying up from Florida following his appearance at the Daytona 500. The former Chicago Bulls star and the current Lakers star shared a hug on the floor, as cameras soaked it in.

Then this from James later…

James hit the fadeaway over Zach Levine and Joel Embid to win the game in front of his hometown crowd.

“I couldn’t have dreamt of that moment any better,” he told reporters afterward.

Below, James comments on his moment with MJ (at the 4:18 mark), draining the game winning shot (at the 0:21 mark), plus his thoughts on Steph Curry’s historic night, spending the All-Star weekend with his childhood friends for the first time ever, and much more:

Team LeBron Takes All-Star Game https://philadelphiaobserver.com/team-lebron-takes-all-star-game/ Fri, 12 Mar 2021 17:57:41 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2177 Greek Freak Wins Kobe Bryant MVP AwardPhoto: Special to the NY Beacon

In Atlanta, Team LeBron James dominated Team Kevin Durant 170-150 in the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. Giannis Antetokounmpo leading all scorers with 35 points, good enough to earn him the Kia Kobe Bryant Most Valuable Player Award. “Obviously, I’m extremely happy at just having the award with the name of Kobe Bryant in my house,” he said after the game. “It’s a great feeling. I wanted to win the one last year really bad and I had a chance to win because I felt like I wanted to have the trophy in my house. This year I wasn’t even thinking about winning it, I was just thinking about having fun, and I had the opportunity to play well. My team played great and I was able to just win it and to have the trophy with the name of Kobe Bryant, it’s amazing, and I know he would be happy. Yeah, I know he’d be happy.”

Kyrie Irving led the local teams with 24 points, while James Harden added 21, and Julius Randle 4 points, all for the losing team. But instead of talking about the game, Irving wanted to talk about the charitable efforts of the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, which raised millions of dollars for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). “I’m just grateful to be able to be on this platform to share it with the HBCU colleges,” Irving said. “A lot of my brothers and sisters, a lot of my relatives out here — and I don’t take that for granted. So, a lot more work to be done in the community to shed light on the HCBUs and a lot of the students, a lot of our younger generation that will eventually be the leaders of our world. They start in places like HBCUs. We’ve just got to continue to stay the path, stay committed to the work. That’s most important. Then the kids will — they’ll follow up for us. Just keep on giving them support. So, it’s pretty cool.”

Harden was asked about the addition of Blake Griffin to the Brooklyn Nets. “I’m sure (Blake Griffin) wants to win,” Harden surmised. “If he passed up more money to obviously stay in Detroit, he wants to win, and he wants to have an opportunity to play meaningful minutes. I’m assuming that’s one of the reasons why he came. Obviously, we know the athletic and high-jumping Blake, but I think as of these last couple of years, he’s knocking down the three-ball a little bit better, ball-handling is a lot better, and he can be a great contribution to this team.

Though Obi Toppin was the runner-up in the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest, which took place at halftime, (Anfernee Simons of Portland won), the experience was a memorable one for the New York Knicks rookie. “I always said LeBron was one guy that if I saw him, I’m going to be like, wow,” Toppin expressed. “As soon as I saw (LeBron James), he looked at me, came up to me and he was like, ‘What’s up, Obi?’ I was like, ‘dang, you know my name?’ That whole experience was good. But obviously everybody, every player who’s here is a great player. They got here for a reason. Just being here with all these guys is amazing.”

Domantis Sabonis of the Indiana Pacers won the Taco Bell Skills Contest and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors won the Mountain Dew Three-Point Contest, nailing the final money ball to earn the victory. Though the COVID-19 Pandemic forced the entire All-Star experience into one day, it was still quite enjoyable. Hopefully, things will be back to normal when the 2022 NBA All-Star Game hits Cleveland.

14-Year-Old Artist Paints Portrait Of Lebron James For Time Magazine https://philadelphiaobserver.com/14-year-old-artist-paints-portrait-of-lebron-james-for-time-magazine/ Thu, 17 Dec 2020 14:38:49 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=1875

A 14-year-old painter has made it onto the latest cover of Time magazine thanks to LeBron James.

Tyler Gordon’s painting of the NBA champion was featured on the magazine’s cover this week after the Los Angeles Lakers star was named, “Athlete Of The Year.”

Gordon, who has been painting since he was 10 years old, told local news outlet WAPT that it has always been his dream to make it big.

“When I was 10 years old, I had this dream of God telling me if I didn’t use my talent he was going to take it away from me. So that night at three in the morning, I ran into my mom’s room and told her about my dream. At first, she thought that I was playing around. Then the next night, I had the same dream,” he said.

Gordon was deaf until age six and now has a stutter. He said he admires President-elect Joe Biden who inspired him to accept his stutter.

“(Biden) stutters like me and he’s not afraid to do public speeches and use his voice and I’m really inspired by him,” Gordon told ABC 7 News. “He helps me accept my stutter.”

Thanks to Twitter, he was able to get in touch with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris after making a portrait of her. Harris eventually called him and thanked him for the portrait, as Blavity previously reported.

“She was just really humble. One thing that I really like about her, is that even though it was right before Thanksgiving and she’s the vice president[-elect], she was still at home cooking cornbread with her family. It really inspired me to stay humble and keep pushing forward,” Gordon said.

Breanna Stewart, LeBron james, Naomi Osaka, Patrick Mahomes, and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif all demonstrated athlete activism during the course of this tumultuous year. But Lakers star, Lebron James is the first athlete to win the award three times: 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Stewart, Osaka, Mahomes, and Duvernay-Tardiff are all under 30 and early in their activism journeys. But James, 35, found his social and political voice long ago. With his efforts for racial justice, education reform and Black community empowerment, he has set the standard for socially conscious athletes.

Mahomes, quarter back for the Kansas City Chiefs, was among a group of NFL stars who pushed NFL owners to acknowledge past wrongs, admit the league erred in its response to peaceful NFL protests of police brutality, and affirm that Black Lives Matter.

Osaka, a tennis star and U.S. Open champion used her fame and celebrity to confront police violence and racial injustice in eye-catching ways. She made a statement at the U.S. Open tournament, wearing seven different masks, each one printed with the name of a Black American who was killed in a situation of police violence. At the end of the tournament, Osaka told reporters that the point of her masks was “to make people start talking.”

He left Cleveland for Miami, finally became a champion, went back to his beloved northeast Ohio, delivered on another title promise, then left for the Los Angeles Lakers and the next challenge. He played in eight straight finals. No NBA player won more games or more MVP awards over the last 10 years than he did. He started a school. He married his high school sweetheart.

“That’s all?” LeBron James asked, feigning disbelief.

No, that’s not all. Those were just some highlights of the last 10 years. There were many more, as the man called “King” spent the last decade reigning over all others — with no signs of slowing down.

James is The Associated Press male athlete of the decade, adding his name to a list that includes Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky and Arnold Palmer. He was a runaway winner in a vote of AP member sports editors and AP beat writers, easily outpacing runner-up Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.

LeBron: I’m not going to harp on China issue https://philadelphiaobserver.com/lebron-im-not-going-to-harp-on-china-issue/ Thu, 24 Oct 2019 13:07:57 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=180

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is ready to move on from the China controversyand focus on winning a championship and other things.

Just a day after criticizing Houston Rockets’ general manager Daryl Morey as “misinformed” over a tweet supporting Hong Kong protesters, James said Tuesday he has more pressing issues to deal with at home.

“I’d be cheating my teammates by continuing to harp on something that won’t benefit us trying to win a championship because that’s what we’re here for,” James told reporters Tuesday. “We’re not politicians. I think it’s a huge political thing but we are leaders and we can step up at times. But … you don’t feel like you should speak upon things you shouldn’t have to.”

James said he has a list of concerns in his own backyard that he should prioritize more than political issues a world away.

“There’s things that happen in my own community — trying to help my kids graduate high school and go off to college — what’s been my main concern over the last couple years — and my school. Trying to make sure the inner city kids that grew up in my hometown can have a brighter future and look at me as inspiration to get out of the hellhole of the inner city. And we don’t talk about those stories enough.”
