*(CNN) — Two men (Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, and Dominic M. Miller) were charged with murder and other felony charges for their roles in the mass shooting after a Kansas City Chiefs championship rally last week, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Tuesday.

Mays, of Raytown, and Miller, of Kansas City, were both charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action, the prosecutor’s office said. They are being held on $1 million bond.

According to the investigation, Mays was in a verbal argument with another person that escalated, and Mays then drew a handgun. Almost immediately, Miller and others pulled their firearms, leading to the shootout, Baker said. The two did not know each other before that day, Baker added.

Both defendants have been hospitalized and in custody since the shooting, she said.

Though they were both charged with murder, Miller’s firearm was the one that fatally wounded Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old mother of two and local DJ and radio host.

These defendants are separate from the two teenagers who face gun-related and resisting arrest charges and are in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center, according to Baker. Additional arrests are possible, Baker said.

The charges come a week after the deadly shooting that left Lopez-Galvan dead and wounded more than 20 others, including nearly a dozen children.

The shooting outside Union Station sparked chaos and put a tragic end to what had been a euphoric day of celebration for the back-to-back Super Bowl champions.

Police initially said Wednesday they detained three people after the shooting, but one was later “determined to not be involved.”

Lopez-Galvan’s family released a statement thanking the prosecutor’s office, police and other law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.

“Though it does not bring back our beloved Lisa, it is comforting to know that the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office and the KCPD made it a top priority to seek justice for Lisa, the other shooting victims, those who had to witness this tragedy unfold and the Kansas City community,” the family said.

The incident was at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which like CNN counts those in which four or more are shot, not including a perpetrator. It also marked the second shooting in a year at a major US sports title celebration, after two people were wounded in June as Denver fans left a parade for the NBA’s Nuggets.

Defendants admit to opening fire, documents state

Charging documents released by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office offer further details of what happened before, during and after the shooting, including alleged confessions from the two men charged with murder.

Citing surveillance video of the shooting, a probable cause statement says the shooting began with a confrontation between two groups.

Mays got into a verbal confrontation with a group of people and approached them in an “aggressive” and “angry” manner, according to the statement. He then allegedly pulled out a handgun, pointed it at one of the individuals and began chasing and shooting at him, according to the statement. Other individuals took out their firearms and appeared to start shooting at Mays, who was struck by gunfire, the statement said.

Miller, meanwhile, allegedly positioned himself in a crowd of people, pulled out a firearm and appeared to begin shooting, the statement says. An unidentified person shot Miller in the lower back, causing him to fall to the ground, the statement says.

Mays was found wounded and taken to a hospital for treatment. In a hospital interview two days after the shooting, Mays told detectives he started shooting because the others said “I’m going to get you,” the statement says.

“Stupid, man. Just pulled a gun out and started shooting,” Mays allegedly said, according to the probable cause statement. “I shouldn’t have done that. Just being stupid.”

Kansas City Mother Faces Felony Charge After Allegedly Placing Infant In Oven, Killing Her https://philadelphiaobserver.com/kansas-city-mother-faces-felony-charge-after-allegedly-placing-infant-in-oven-killing-her/ Sun, 18 Feb 2024 16:33:58 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5711

A Kansas City mother, Mariah Thomas, has been charged with a felony after she allegedly put her one-month-old baby in an oven while the baby slept. According to a press release from Jackson County Prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker, police found the baby on Feb. 9 after they responded to a 911 call that described a “non-breathing infant” and when they arrived at the residence, officers found that the small child had “apparent burns,” People reported.

According to Baker, officers were told that Thomas was “putting the child down for a nap and accidentally placed the child in the oven instead of the crib.” The Kansas City Fire Department, which also responded to the scene, pronounced the baby dead at the scene.https://www.youtube.com/embed/o2i9o5fth38?feature=oembed

According to the criminal complaint, the baby was discovered “in the living room lying in a car seat just inside of the front door” and “had sustained apparent thermal injuries on various parts of her body.” The complaint continued, “She was clothed in a bodysuit over a diaper. The clothing appeared to have melted onto the diaper, and it was very dirty, possibly burned on the backside.”

According to the complaint, a “baby blanket with significant burn marks” was also found at the scene and collected by officers. Before the call was placed, the baby’s grandfather returned to the home and smelled smoke and later found the child in the crib, deceased. After this, the complaint says, Thomas said that she “accidentally put her in the oven”

‘A Serial Killer’: Kansas City Cop Remained on the Force After Fatally Shooting Unarmed Black Man, Kneeing Pregnant Woman In the Back. Now, He’s Killed Two Other People https://philadelphiaobserver.com/a-serial-killer-kansas-city-cop-remained-on-the-force-after-fatally-shooting-unarmed-black-man-kneeing-pregnant-woman-in-the-back-now-hes-killed-two-other-people/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 09:19:05 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5026

A Kansas City police officer who killed an unarmed Black man in 2020, with a record of other violent arrests of Black civilians has been named in the killings of two other people.

Officer Blayne Newton is undergoing a routine investigation following the shooting deaths of Marcell T. Nelson and Kristen Fairchild, both 42, on June 9, 2023, in Kansas City.

According to Fox4 News, Newton shot Nelson and Fairchild while on patrol close to 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard at approximately 9 p.m. before calling for help. Responding officers found Nelson dead and Fairchild in need of medical assistance. She later died at the hospital. A third person, Nelson’s 20-year-old nephew, also was shot in the head but is expected to survive.

Reportedly, three people with knowledge of the investigation into the shootings identified Newton as the shooter.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol claimed that Newton saw a passenger who had been riding in a pickup truck get out of the truck and approach a minivan while holding a firearm before getting back into the truck and speeding off. MSHP claimed that Newton — who is identified as “the officer” — pulled up alongside the minivan, preventing his dashcam from recording the interaction.

Newton fired several shots into the driver’s side window of the minivan before it slowly rolled forward and hit a curb. Authorities believe that Fairchild was driving the minivan and also claimed that four firearms were found in the minivan.

They also alleged that shell casings found in the minivan suggest that someone fired from inside the vehicle. The investigation is reportedly ongoing. It’s unclear why Newton approached the minivan instead of following the pickup truck. Three people walked out of the vehicle after the officer ordered those inside to exit, while the driver and passenger were too injured to move.

Judge seals records of white man who shot Ralph Yarl in the head after teen rang his doorbell https://philadelphiaobserver.com/judge-seals-records-of-white-man-who-shot-ralph-yarl-in-the-head-after-teen-rang-his-doorbell/ Sun, 04 Jun 2023 15:08:48 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=4966 Clay County Judge Louis Angles said the case’s publicity led to threats against Andrew Lester, who his attorney says has been forced to move three times since he shot Yarl at his front door.

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas City man accused of shooting a Black teenager who mistakenly came to his door last month is scheduled to be back in court Thursday, days after a judge ruled that court documents in the case will be sealed and kept from the public.

The hearing for 84-year-old Andrew Lester is to set new dates for future hearings in the case and is expected to be brief.

Store owner charged in Black teen’s murder shot at suspected shoplifters twice before, wasn’t charged

Lester has pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the April 13 shooting of Ralph Yarl, who knocked on Lester’s door while trying to pick up his young brothers, who were at a home a block away. This booking photo provided by the Kansas City Police Department shows Andrew Lester, who shot Ralph Yarl, a Black teen who approached his house in Kansas City, Missouri last week while trying to pick up his younger brothers. Lester has been charged with first-degree assault, the Clay County prosecutor said. (Photo: Kansas City Police Department via AP)

Yarl, who has celebrated his 17th birthday since the shooting, suffered gunshot wounds to his head and wrist and continues to recover at home.

Lester remains free after posting $20,000 — 10% of his $200,000 bond.

The shooting drew international attention amid claims that Lester, who is white, received preferential treatment from investigators in the hours after he shot Yarl. President Joe Biden and several celebrities issued statements calling for justice for Yarl.

Lester admitted that he shot Yarl through the door without warning because he was “scared to death” he was about to be robbed by the Black person standing at his door.

On Tuesday, Clay County Judge Louis Angles granted a request from Lester’s attorney to seal the court documents, saying the publicity led to threats against Lester, who his attorney says has been forced to move three times. He also said the publicity has made it more difficult for the case to be heard before a fair and impartial jury.

“The overwhelming majority of the reporting continues to assert that the alleged actions of (Lester) were racially motivated, which if believed, virtually eliminates the defense available to (Lester) related to the reasonableness of his actions,” Angles wrote in the ruling.

Giants D Steps Up https://philadelphiaobserver.com/giants-d-steps-up/ Fri, 12 Nov 2021 21:39:14 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3062 X Hits The Mark With 2 Int’s

New York Giants fans can only imagine. Off sides cost them the game against Washington. The defense comes up short against Atlanta. The offense betrays them in Kansas City. Big Blue takes out the Saints in New Orleans then dominates Carolina at MetLife Stadium. The Giants could not have predicted the outcome of the Dallas Cowboys game when they hosted the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday. When they look back on their season and are watching the playoffs from home, the outcome of those three games will haunt them.

It was a crisp Sunday afternoon when the Giants won the coin toss and elected to receive the Vegas kick off. 9 plays and 75 yards later, quarterback Daniel Jones get them into the end zone for a early 7-0 lead. Jones finding tight end Evan Engram for the 30-yard touchdown pass. The Raiders didn’t flinch the first time they got the ball. Quarterback David Carr moved them 73 yards on 12 plays in more than 5 minutes watching wide receiver Hunter Renfrow run it in from 2-yards tying the game at 7. Both teams would punt on their next possession before the Raiders would take a 10-7 lead after a Daniel  Carlson 25-yard field goal.

They traded punts again before the Giants would tie the game at 10 after a Graham Gano 35-yard field and then watched the Raiders take a 13-10 lead right before halftime when Carlson hits another field goal from 32-yards. The Raiders took the field to start the third quarter looking to extend their lead. The Giants defense stepped up in big way. Carr looked at Renfrow who ran a short route. Safety Xavier McKinney, who missed two days of practice because of Covid issues, steps in front for the interception returning it 41 yards for the go ahead touchdown. Said McKinney of the play, “I just read the quarterback. I felt Renfrow going out and I was kind of just all eyes on the quarterback the whole time. He was looking it down, so just trust my instincts and I went, and I made the play.”

Both Teams exchanged field goals with the Raiders getting within 1-point (17-16) before New York goes up 20-16 after another Gano 32-yard field goal. With Las Vegas looking to take the lead, McKinney comes up big again. This time, Carr looks for Zay Jones deep and McKinney comes up with his second interception icing the game. Said McKinney off his second pick, “I actually told (Cornerback James Bradberry) Brad earlier in the game they did the same thing, I broke on it. They actually threw a back shoulder and I told him after that, I told him, I said, If they do that again, I’m going to beat it and I’m going to pick it. They did the same thing, tried to run the double move, pumped them and then threw it the same way he pumped, and I made a play.” Gano adds another field goal (38 yards) and watches as outside linebacker Quincy Roche forces a fumble that defensive end Leonard Williams recovers.

Said second head coach Joe Judge after the win, “really, what I see with our guys is a group of guys who are truly a team, they work together, they support each other, they compete against each other, but they show up every week with the intent of being successful together as a team and they put in the work of what it takes to be successful.”

Last year, the New York Giants had to rely on the Philadelphia Eagles to beat the Washington Football team in order to get to the postseason. The Eagles were on their way to victory when they benched their quarterback and watched Washington come from behind to win the game knocking them out of the playoffs.

This year, at the end of the season, they will look at those losses against Washington, Atlanta and Kansas City as the reason they will go another year without being part of postseason tournament.
