A Black man from Virginia says he was falsely accused of stealing from his former employer, who fired him even after the allegations were found to be false 10 minutes after Virginia Beach Police Department officers took him into custody.

On Feb. 12, James Humphrey, who previously worked as a shipping manager for GBRS Group, said via a GoFundMe campaign that he has “endured immense emotional distress and financial strain” since the ordeal.

He shared via TikTok the body camera footage detailing what happened during his arrest on Dec. 4, 2023. The video of the incident has gone viral with more than 5 million views.

It shows a GBRS Group employee telling officers, “We saw him leave with the box,” referring to security camera footage that appeared to show Humphrey leaving the tactical training and brand consulting company with the box and returning without it.

The box contained a BCM lower, a part of an AR-15 rifle, the employee said in the clip.

“He didn’t send it?” an officer is heard asking the employee. “No, it’s still outstanding. The shipment still hasn’t been scanned in,” the man responds, according to the body cam footage.

White Manager at Philly Starbucks Where Two Black Men Were Arrested After Being Denied Access to Bathroom Wins $25M After Claiming She Was Fired Because of Her Race https://philadelphiaobserver.com/white-manager-at-philly-starbucks-where-two-black-men-were-arrested-after-being-denied-access-to-bathroom-wins-25m-after-claiming-she-was-fired-because-of-her-race/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 09:22:26 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=5029

A former Starbucks regional manager was just awarded $25.6 million after she was fired from her job following the arrests of two Black men at a Philadelphia store five years ago in a case that set a categorical example of racial profiling and implicit bias.

A New Jersey federal jury ruled that Starbucks violated the federal civil rights of Shannon Phillips. That jury ultimately determined that Starbucks fired Phillips “because she was white,” The New York Times reports.

In a unanimous decision, jurors concluded that race was a determinative factor in Phillips’ firing, violating federal and state anti-discrimination laws.

In April 2018, two Black men entered a Starbucks shop in Rittenhouse Square, waiting on their white business partner to arrive. After not ordering anything, one of the men asked to use the bathroom and was refused. The staff asked the men to leave, and when they didn’t, one worker called the police to report they were trespassing.

Indiana jail officer fired after inmate hit during struggle https://philadelphiaobserver.com/indiana-jail-officer-fired-after-inmate-hit-during-struggle/ Sat, 18 Feb 2023 11:53:39 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=4646

Marcus Ford suffered a broken nose and broken orbital bone.

A white correctional officer in southwestern Indiana who is seen in body camera footage punching a Black inmate during a struggle has been fired.

Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Martè said Friday that the decision to terminate James Mitchell was part of his vow to make “accountability and transparency” a “top priority” of the sheriff’s department.

Mitchell and two other officers at the county jail in Bloomington were attempting to move Marcus Ford from a holding cell to a medical observation cell Jan. 31 after the inmate complained of health issues to nurses at the facility.https://www.youtube.com/embed/1lSEGxnDlKE?feature=oembed

Ford refuses to leave the holding cell. In the footage released by the sheriff’s office, Ford is seen threatening the officers if they try to move him.

“Soon as you touch me, it’s going down,” Ford says. “You all better know how to fight.”

He later repeats: “I’m not going in that room. I’m not going in that room.”

As the officers move in, Mitchell is struck in the mouth and suffers a bloody lip. He is seen throwing punches at Ford’s head and striking Ford as the inmate is being restrained by other officers.

Martè said Ford suffered a broken nose and broken orbital bone.

A document detailing the decision to fire Mitchell states that he failed to transition to nonviolent strategies, failed to reduce the need for force and failed to comply when instructed twice to leave the area, WTTV-TV reported.

“No corrections officer wants to have to use force when they come to work,” Martè said. “But even when my staff is forced to use force due to a combative inmate, they must continue to follow our policies requiring de-escalation whenever the situation allows it.”

Students Rally Behind Black Tampa School Cop Fired for Using The N-Word https://philadelphiaobserver.com/students-rally-behind-black-tampa-school-cop-fired-for-using-the-n-word/ Mon, 05 Apr 2021 19:38:31 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2276

Delvin White, a Tampa police officer, knew he was doing well in his job. He was, however, hit hard when he lost his job for what he thought was “culture.”

According to Bodycam footage, White is seen driving as he spoke with his wife on phone. He then uses the N-word in a November 12, 2020 incident. In another incident, a video shows the cop using the same word on a student who stubbornly didn’t want to leave campus after receiving a suspension.

“In the second video you see me interacting with a young man,” said White. “I was frustrated with him and you will see I had so much patience with him. I didn’t want to arrest that young man. I know what happens especially with young Black men when they get put in the system so, I did everything I could not to arrest him.”

During the interaction, both White and the young man use the N-word. According to White, the young man said he didn’t take any offense. However, he still lost his job, as dictated by the B1.2 Discriminatory Conduct Policy.

“It’s just too much. I understand you feel like you have to do something; if I would have got suspended for 30 days, I wouldn’t have complained. It’s the fact that it had to go all the way to termination when you received no complaint from anybody in the community,” said White.

Brain Dugan, White’s former police chief said in a statement: “Derogatory statements made by police officers jeopardize the trust that our department works to establish with our community. Tampa Police officers are held to a higher standard and incidents like this negatively impact the entire law enforcement profession.”

White’s former school, Middleton High’s students met at the school, all in white, for what they called Officer White Day. They carried out a rally and had a petition which had 2,000 signatures.
