A group of racial justice organizations wants Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to resign immediately after the explosive release of leaked internal documents. Kairos, 18 Million Rising, Media Justice, Action Center on Race and the Economy, MPower Change and U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights released a statement outlining how Facebook has misled the public and officials on the platform’s steps to address hate speech and disinformation on its site.

Facebook has suggested over and over again that it takes down nearly 96% of hate speech, but, in reality, newly released documents suggest Facebook was removing only 5% or less of hate speech. Facebook’s persistent actions to undermine content moderation are the latest evidence that Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook leadership will continue to sacrifice the safety of our communities to line their pockets.

No number of P.R. stunts thinly veiled as solidarity in support of Black lives can sweep Facebook’s neglect of its users and the violence it is perpetuating under the rug. For too long, Facebook has operated with unprecedented immunity from meaningful oversight and, as a result, has continued to prime the spigot of hate content from extremist groups on Black and other marginalized communities, both domestically and abroad. Rather than serving as a true public forum, Facebook has helped to suppress the voices of human rights advocates in nations such as India, Palestine, Myanmar while building inroads for threats of violence and political misinformation to fester.

Facebook Launches ‘We the Culture’ Accelerator Program to Fund and Support Black Content Creators https://philadelphiaobserver.com/facebook-launches-we-the-culture-accelerator-program-to-fund-and-support-black-content-creators/ Tue, 23 Feb 2021 14:21:39 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2092

As part of its $25 million commitment to empower Black creators, Facebook is amplifying and investing in Black voices through its new We the Culture content initiative.

Launched on Tuesday, We the Culture was curated by a team of Black Facebook employees to help Black content creators build successful and sustainable digital communities on the platform. It kicked off with an inaugural class of 120 plus creatives that includes Danielle YoungLauren “Sitting Pretty Lolo’ SpencerCameron J. Henderson, and Nneka Irobunda. The initiative also incorporates programming for Facebook Watch in partnership with production companies focused on Black creatives. Among the first shows are “Chop It Up” with actress Storm Reid, “Asking for a Friend” hosted by actress and entrepreneur Vanessa Simmons, and “Mastery of Comedy” with media host Angela Yee.

Whether music, art, poetry, Original programming, food, or social justice, We the Culture “serves as a launch point for Black creators” and spotlights “the beautiful, layered and expressive voices shaping black culture and driving it forward,” said Facebook in a statement sent to BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“We The Culture is a multi-faceted initiative with the goal of elevating Black creators to share their vision and voice with the world for a broader community and empower them to build successful, entertaining, and sustainable businesses [and enterprises] across all of our apps,” says Dan Reed, the VP of Global Media, Sports and Equity Partnerships at Facebook, in an interview with BE.

In addition to funding their content production, Black creators are also provided with partner management support, access to educational and training resources, marketing support, and tools for audience development. The goal, says Reed, is to “fully empower this group of up-and-coming and emerging creators to be successful on our platforms for a very long time.”

Facebook Bans Rally Forge, the Marketing Company it Says Ran Fake Pro-Trump Accounts for Turning Point USA https://philadelphiaobserver.com/facebook-bans-rally-forge-the-marketing-company-it-says-ran-fake-pro-trump-accounts-for-turning-point-usa/ Fri, 16 Oct 2020 12:17:42 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=1633

On October 8, Facebook said it had banned a company it believes ran fake accounts for the conservative group Turning Point USA.

According to Facebook, Rally Forge, a marketing company that works on behalf of Turning Point USA, has launched a campaign that relied upon fake accounts that posted praise for President Donald Trump and criticism of former Vice President Joe Biden.

The campaign included tactics like commenting on the Facebook pages of major national American media outlets. The alleged activity was first identified through an investigation by The Washington Post, which prompted Facebook to look into Rally Forge.

According to a report Facebook released on October 8, most of these accounts used stock profile photos and posed as right-leaning individuals from across the US. When reviewing content posted in 2018, Facebook found that some of these accounts posed as left-leaning individuals to comment on content as well. Instead of posting their own content, this activity was mostly centered around commenting on news articles written by news organizations and public figures.

In the report, Facebook also added that the most recent activity included creating what they call “thinly veiled personas” whose names were subtle variations on users’ real names and whose sole activity on their platform was associated with this deceptive campaign. As of now, Facebook has permanently banned those accounts for Rally Forge.

As of today, Facebook says that it has removed 55 Facebook pages, 76 Instagram accounts and 200 Facebook accounts as a result of the investigation. Over 370,000 accounts followed one or more of the Facebook pages and over 22,000 people followed one or more of the Instagram accounts.

Rally Forge did not respond to a request for comment immediately. When contacted for comment, Turning Point USA said that Rally Forge was actually associated with Turning Point Action. Unlike Turning Point USA, Turning Point Action is an independent legal entity from Turning Point USA, it is a non-profit organization that allows for certain political activities. Turning Point Action said in a statement that Facebook’s press release in question was in reference to a project for Turning Point Action, a 501c4, an entirely separate entity.

The main content of the statement of Turning Point Action is that they are working hard to operate within social platforms’ terms of service on all of its communications and projects and they are hoping to work closely with Facebook to rectify any misunderstanding.

Facebook said it was unclear whether the group had knowledge of the tactics used by the marketing company. As a result, Facebook did not ban Turning Point USA or its president, Charlie Kirk.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, said in an interview with reporters that the operations the company has removed recently are “younger” and have less of a following than previously removed operations. That means diminished returns and diminished operations. Gleicher added, “We know that these actors will continue to try to find a path around what the enforcement is put in place. But what we have found is that the combination of expert investigation and automated enforcement means that these operations are smaller, lasting less time and reaching fewer people before they get caught.”
