Four people were killed and 17 others injured in a mass shooting late Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama, when multiple gunmen opened fire in a busy entertainment district. The shooting, which took place in the Five Points South area, is believed to have been a targeted attack on one individual, with the remaining victims caught in the crossfire, police said. “Someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed,” Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said at a news conference on Sunday.

The gunmen arrived in a vehicle just after 11 p.m., opened fire, and then fled the scene, according to police. The attack, which left more than 100 shell casings scattered across the area, killed two men and a woman at the scene, while a fourth man died later at a hospital. The Birmingham Police Department, working with the FBI, is urging anyone with information to come forward as the shooters remain at large. Investigators suspect that illegal gun conversion devices, which can turn semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic firearms, may have been used.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin described the city’s gun violence as being at “epidemic levels” and called for stricter laws to combat the issue. He specifically pointed to the use of conversion devices, which are federally illegal but not regulated at the state level. The mayor said enforcement requires a political shift, noting that stronger laws are needed to give police “the tools to take shooters off the streets prior to an incident like this.”

The shooting took place in one of Birmingham’s liveliest neighborhoods, known for its bars, restaurants, and live music venues. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as emergency responders worked to transport victims to hospitals. One bystander, Dajon Singleton, told a local news affiliate that he heard screams and watched as several victims were taken away on stretchers. “It was very devastating,” Singleton said, adding that crime in the area typically spikes around the holidays.

As of Sunday evening, four of the surviving victims were reported to be in life-threatening condition. The shooting is part of a larger trend of escalating gun violence in Birmingham, which has seen an increase in homicides this year despite national declines. “Rest assured, we are going to do everything we possibly can to uncover, identify, and hunt down who was ever responsible,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. Local businesses have been asked to provide any surveillance footage that could aid in the investigation.

Taylen Mosley, a 2-year-old boy who went missing on Wednesday, was found dead on Friday in the jaws of an alligator near his family’s apartment in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The child Mosley’s mother Pashun Jeffrey was also found dead inside her apartment after she sustained stab wounds, CBS 12 reported.

The boy’s father, 21-year-old Thomas Mosley, is now charged with two counts of first-degree murder, police said.

St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway said officers “spotted an alligator with an object in its mouth” as they were searching for Taylen near Dell Holmes Park.

“As the detectives got closer they fired one round to the alligator,” Holloway said at a press conference on Friday. “The alligator dropped the object that he had in his mouth and we were able to retrieve Taylen’s body intact.”

Neighbors told police that they heard a loud commotion near the family’s apartment around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, CBS News reported. However, police were not called at that time.

Jeffery’s mother contacted the apartment complex property manager the next day after not hearing from her daughter.

The FBI joined the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and local authorities, along with dive teams, to look for Taylen. That’s when they found the 2-year-old in the mouth of an alligator in a recreation area near his home.

Police are still searching for the suspect, who O’Neill described as a white man between 18-20 years old and wearing a T-shirt.

A rifle was recovered from the scene, he said. He said the attack appears to be “completely random” and the suspect appeared to shoot from a roof. O’Neill advised people to shelter in place.

A total of 31 people were transported to hospitals, according to hospital spokespeople.

Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis dead at 80 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/civil-rights-legend-rep-john-lewis-dead-at-80/ Thu, 23 Jul 2020 13:59:29 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=1340

“It is with inconsolable grief and enduring sadness that we announce the passing of U.S. Rep. John Lewis,” his family said in a statement. “He was honored and respected as the conscience of the US Congress and an icon of American history, but we knew him as a loving father and brother. He was a stalwart champion in the on-going struggle to demand respect for the dignity and worth of every human being. He dedicated his entire life to non-violent activism and was an outspoken advocate in the struggle for equal justice in America. He will be deeply missed.”

It’s another heartbreak in a year filled with them, as America mourns the deaths of nearly 140,000 Americans from Covid-19 and struggles to bring the virus under control.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced his death in a statement.

“Today, America mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of American history: Congressman John Lewis, the Conscience of the Congress,” the California Democrat said.

Lewis had vowed to fight the disease after announcing in late December 2019 that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which was discovered as a result of a routine medical visit and subsequent testing.

“I have been in some kind of fight — for freedom, equality, basic human rights — for nearly my entire life. I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now,” he said in a statement at the time.

Lewis, a Democrat who served as the US representative for Georgia’s 5th Congressional District for more than three decades, was widely seen as a moral conscience of Congress because of his decades-long embodiment of nonviolent fight for civil rights. His passionate oratory was backed by a long record of action that included, by his count, more than 40 arrests while demonstrating against racial and social injustice.

A follower and colleague of Martin Luther King Jr., he participated in lunch counter sit-ins, joined the Freedom Riders in challenging segregated buses and — at the age of 23 — was a keynote speaker at the historic 1963 March on Washington.

Ellis Marsalis Jr., Jazz Pianist And Patriarch Of New Orleans Musical Clan, Dead At 85 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/ellis-marsalis-jr-jazz-pianist-and-patriarch-of-new-orleans-musical-clan-dead-at-85/ Fri, 10 Apr 2020 13:37:17 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=863

Ellis Marsalis Jr., jazz pianist, teacher and patriarch of a New Orleans musical clan that includes famed performer sons Wynton and Branford, has died after battling pneumonia brought on by the new coronavirus, one of his sons said late Wednesday.

He was 85.

Ellis Marsalis III confirmed in an Associated Press phone interview that his father’s death was sparked by the virus that is causing the global pandemic. “Pneumonia was the actual thing that caused his demise. But it was pneumonia brought on by COVID-19,” he said.

He said he drove Sunday from Baltimore to be with his father as he was hospitalized in Louisiana, which has been hit hard by the outbreak. Others in the family spent time with him, too.

‘Everybody’s in the same boat’: Coronavirus drives New York’s hospitals to breaking point

Four of the jazz patriarch’s six sons are musicians: Wynton, trumpeter, is America’s most prominent jazz spokesman as artistic director of jazz at New York’s Lincoln Center. Branford, saxophonist, led The Tonight Show band and toured with Sting. Delfeayo, a trombonist, is a prominent recording producer and performer. And Jason, a percussionist, has made a name for himself with his own band and as an accompanist. Ellis III, who decided music wasn’t his gig, is a photographer-poet in Baltimore.

In a statement, Mayor LaToya Cantrell said of the man who’d continued to perform regularly in New Orleans until December: “Ellis Marsalis was a legend. He was the prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz. He was a teacher, a father, and an icon — and words aren’t sufficient to describe the art, the joy and the wonder he showed the world.”

Legendary ‘Lean On Me’ Singer Bill Withers Dies At 81 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/legendary-lean-on-me-singer-bill-withers-dies-at-81/ Fri, 10 Apr 2020 13:32:34 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=854

Bill Withers, who wrote and sang a string of soulful songs in the 1970s that have stood the test of time, including “ Lean On Me, ” “Lovely Day” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” has died from heart complications, his family said in a statement to The Associated Press. He was 81.

The three-time Grammy Award winner, who withdrew from making music in the mid-1980s, died on Monday in Los Angeles, the statement said. His death comes as the public has drawn inspiration from his music during the coronavirus pandemic, with health care workers, choirs, artists and more posting their own renditions on “Lean on Me” to help get through the difficult times.

At Least 848 African Americans in the State of Illinois have COVID-19

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,” the family statement read. “As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.“

Withers’ songs during his brief career have become the soundtracks of countless engagements, weddings and backyard parties. They have powerful melodies and perfect grooves melded with a smooth voice that conveys honesty and complex emotions without vocal acrobatics.

“Lean On Me,” a paean to friendship, was performed at the inaugurations of both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me” are among Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“He’s the last African-American Everyman,” musician and band leader Questlove told Rolling Stone in 2015. “Bill Withers is the closest thing black people have to a Bruce Springsteen.”
