The mother of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in April 2021, was grabbed by the wrist this week by an officer of the same Brooklyn Center police department that killed her son.

According to CNNKatie Wright told the press that she observed a heavy police presence and a young person being detained when she stopped on the side of the road to film the interaction.

“All I was doing was my civic duty to pull over and make sure that those babies got home safe to their families because I don’t want what happened to me to happen to any other families,” Wright said during a press conference on Thursday.

Daunte Wright was shot and killed by former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter, who claimed she accidentally fired her gun instead of her taser. She was sentenced to two years in a Minnesota prison.

CNN notes that Katie Wright shared the interaction on Facebook where a person was being arrested. An officer is heard saying to Wright, “she’s getting a ticket,” as another officer says, “Nah, don’t worry about it. Come on!”

The officer then crosses multiple lanes of traffic to confront Wright.

“You’re going to give me your driver’s license, or I’m going to take you to jail for obstruction,” the officer says to Wright, who is sitting in her car filming the officer.

She then says, “You know who I am, right?”

“You guys killed my son, and I’m gonna videotape it,” she says and points in the direction of the traffic stop. “And if you take me to jail, I’m going to sue you.” She also tells the officer not to touch her again.

Mostly White Jury Chosen for Kim Potter Trial in the Death of Daunte Wright https://philadelphiaobserver.com/mostly-white-jury-chosen-for-kim-potter-trial-in-the-death-of-daunte-wright/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 19:50:17 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3162

A mostly white jury has been chosen in the trial of former Minnesota Officer Kim Potter over the shooting death of Daunte Wright. Although split evenly by gender, nine jurors are white, two are Asian and only one is Black, all ranging in age from their 20s to 60s.

According to USA Today, the jurors had to answer a questionnaire before being chosen. All the jurors answered that they knew of the case because of media coverage and many said that they had already seen the body camera footage. Five jurors said they had a negative view of both Potter and Wright.

Daunte Wright was fatally shot and killed during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb after Potter says she mistakenly used her gun instead of her taser on April 11. Potter resigned two days after the shooting. She was charged with first and second degree manslaughter.

According to NBC News, Minnesota’s sentencing guidelines call for minimums of over seven years for first-degree manslaughter and four years for second degree manslaughter, but prosecutors said they’re looking for heftier sentences.

The defense used all five of their peremptory challenges, which means they can dismiss a juror without reason, and the state used all of three of theirs.

From NBC:

The defense on Thursday used one of its peremptory challenges to dismiss a first-year law student who has made comments on social media about cases in which police officers have been convicted. Such challenges cannot be made solely because of a person’s race, ethnicity or gender, and prosecutor Matthew Frank objected to the dismissal of the law student, an Asian woman.

Judge Regina Chu dismissed Frank’s objection, ruling there was no evidence that the defense strike was based on race or gender.

One of the jurors seated the first day was recalled for questioning Thursday after Chu said he had expressed concerns that his identity was revealed when he was first questioned. The jury is anonymous by order of the judge. The man remained on the jury after he told Chu he was willing to continue serving.

Minneapolis Suburb Approves Changes To Policing After Daunte Wright’s Death https://philadelphiaobserver.com/minneapolis-suburb-approves-changes-to-policing-after-daunte-wrights-death/ Mon, 24 May 2021 16:55:07 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2433 The Minneapolis suburb where police recently killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright has approved a package of proposals meant to begin making changes to public safety and violence prevention in the city.

The Brooklyn Center City Council voted 4-1 on Saturday to pass a resolution called the Daunte Wright and Kobe Dimock-Heisler Community Safety & Violence Prevention Act. Mayor Mike Elliott introduced the resolution last week, naming it after two men who abruptly died at the hands of police ― one of whom was killed just last month.

Vanessa Bryant accepts Kobe Bryant Hall of Fame induction: ‘You’re an all-time great’

“This will transform public safety in our city, honoring two young men who were robbed of their futures,” Elliott tweeted. “This is just the first step in a long road ahead ― but that is work that we as a city are ready to do with our community. There will be lots of questions to answer, lots of learning, and lots of opportunity for the community to be at the center of this change.”

‘He Belonged To Us!’: Family Of Daunte Wright Speaks Out; Kim Potter, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Both Resign https://philadelphiaobserver.com/he-belonged-to-us-family-of-daunte-wright-speaks-out-kim-potter-brooklyn-center-police-chief-both-resign/ Mon, 19 Apr 2021 21:21:07 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2317

Several members of Daunte Wright‘s family spoke out on Tuesday alongside other families who gained national prominence after losing a loved one to state sanctioned violence.

“It was the worst day of my life,” Wright’s mother, Katie Wright said as she stood backed by her family.

Wright explained that she was on the phone with her son after he was stopped by Brooklyn Center police on April 11. Wright claims her son told her he was pulled over due to the air-fresheners in the rear-view mirror. As she attempted to provide her son with her insurance information, she said she heard her son exchange words with the officer leading to a scuffle. Seconds later the call ended.

The next call she received was life changing. A woman riding with Daunte told her that her son was shot and was now unresponsive.

“That was the last time I seen my son. That was the last time I heard from my son and I have no explanation,” she said through tears.

One of the most emotional moments came as Naisha Wright, Daunte’s aunt, grieved openly over her family’s loss. She said that she wanted to represent her brother Aubrey Wright, Daunte’s father, who refused to attend the press conference due to his heartbreak.

“They murdered my nephew! She killed my nephew. Every pistol, every taser has a safety on it,” she began.

“I watched that video like everybody else watched that video, that woman held that gun in front of her for a long damn time,” she continued in reference to the theory that Potter mistook her taser for a gun.

“He was loved! He belonged to us!” she said.

“It is unbelievable, something I could not fathom that in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a suburb 10 miles from where the Chauvin trial regarding George Floyd was taking place, that a police officer would shoot and kill another unarmed Black man,” said civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is represent the family.

Crump continued, “If ever there was a time when nobody in America should be killed by police it was during this pinnacle trial of Derek Chauvin which I believe is one of the most impactful civil rights police excessive fuse of force cases in the history of America.”

The families of George Floyd and Emmett Till were also in attendance at the news conference, along with prominent gun control advocates.

Brooklyn Center police claim that Wright was stopped over his license tags, to which Crump said was a remnant of “driving while Black.”

“We’re still in the midst of a pandemic where many people could not get the tags on their license plates renewed because the DMV, like everything in America was shut down,” said Crump.

Police were told to be sensitive favor this reason Crump explained, “But I guess when you’re driving while Black, people sometimes forget memos and initiatives about,” he continued.

At the same time, Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott held a dueling press conference where he announced the resignation of Kim Potter, the officer who fired the fatal shot, and Tim Gannon the Brooklyn Center Police Chief.

“So obviously it’s been an eventful several hours for the city. We are still experiencing trauma in our community from the events that unfolded which led to the killing of Daunte Wright,” said Elliott.

Police Chief says shooting death of Daunte Wright was due to ‘accidental discharge’ https://philadelphiaobserver.com/police-chief-says-shooting-death-of-daunte-wright-was-due-to-accidental-discharge/ Mon, 19 Apr 2021 21:16:31 +0000 http://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=2308 The unidentified female officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright is on administrative leave

The police chief in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota has attributed the death of Daunte Wright, an unarmed Black man, to an “accidental discharge” by the responding police officer.

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon held a press conference on Monday to discuss the shooting death of 20-year-old Wright on Sunday, CNN reported. Gannon claimed that the officer who fired the fatal shot meant to reach for her taser instead.

Bodycam footage of the encounter was released. It showed a female officer shouting “Taser! Taser! Taser” and “I just shot him,” as officers surrounded Wright. Gannon believed that provided context for Wright’s shooting.

“For informational purposes we train with our handguns on our dominant side, and our taser on our weak side. If you’re right-handed you carry your firearm on your right side and your carry your taser on the left,” Gannon said at a press conference attended by journalists and activists.

“This is done purposefully, and it’s trained. As I watch the video and listen to the officer’s commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet.”https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=feedly&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-0&features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfX0%3D&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1381660604868538378&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Ffeedly.com%2Fi%2Fmy&sessionId=830da5b79147bc68d550d33a07becbd06d93c206&siteScreenName=feedly&theme=light&widgetsVersion=1ead0c7%3A1617660954974&width=550px

The chief further claimed that the officer, who has not yet been publicly named, reacted from “distress.”

“As I watch the video and listen to the officer’s commands it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet, this appears to me, from what I viewed, and the officer’s reaction in distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge,” Gannon said.
