A billboard along Highway 16 in Newark, Ohio, sparked controversy after displaying an altered image of Vice President Kamala Harris in a suggestive pose, accompanied by mocking text. Erected by a local towing company, RK Towing, and hosted by Kennedy Outdoor Advertising, the billboard drew sharp criticism for its misogynistic undertones and vulgar implications. Kennedy Outdoor Advertising responded by removing the image, with a spokesperson explaining the offensive innuendo was initially “overlooked” by the company’s sole ad reviewer.

The incident is not the first time Harris has faced gendered attacks; similar narratives have shadowed her since her early days in California politics. Harris, a historic figure as the first woman and first woman of color to serve as vice president, has long been targeted by critics with claims that challenge her competence and integrity. Yet, as her political record reflects, Harris has never lost a general election, winning six consecutive races from San Francisco District Attorney to the U.S. Senate before ascending to the vice presidency.

Harris’s critics often draw from deeply rooted stereotypes. At a recent rally, a speaker referenced her alleged “pimp handlers,” while other conservative voices have invoked sexist tropes such as the “Jezebel spirit” to belittle her, echoing a longstanding trend of such rhetoric in political discourse. Former President Trump joined the fray, telling Fox News that Harris would be easily manipulated by global leaders, adding, “She’ll be like a play toy.”

Public reaction to the Ohio billboard was swift and scathing. Social media users condemned the advertisement as “filthy” and misogynistic. Some highlighted the irony of placing the Harris billboard alongside one featuring Trump, quoting him as saying, “In reality, they’re not after me, they’re after you. I’m just in the way.” Commenters decried the double standard, noting Trump’s own history of documented allegations of sexual misconduct.

Kennedy Outdoor Advertising has expressed regret over the ad’s approval, which they attribute to a lack of oversight. According to a company spokesperson, the sole vetter did not recognize the inappropriate nature of the image, and no further review took place. “If there would have been three to four people reviewing this artwork, it likely would not have been approved,” the spokesperson noted. Following public complaints, the billboard was removed two days after its installation.

On Sunday, Donald Trump was rushed off stage after shots were fired during a campaign rally that was being held in Butler, Pennsylvania.

As Secret Service agents gathered around, there was blood seen on the right of his ear as the agents led him away. He held up a fist as he got into a vehicle. He was confirmed to be doing fine after the shooting attempt.

A suspected shooter is now dead, along with one person who was at the rally.

Who was the shooter?

Per CNN, authorities state that the suspected gunman was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He was identified in a statement early Sunday morning and named as a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, which just just south of where the rally was held. He was shot by authorities.

Crooks was a registered Republican, though, as CNN reported, “Federal Election Commission records show that a donor listed as Thomas Crooks with the same address gave $15 to a Democratic-aligned political action committee called the Progressive Turnout Project in January 2021.” Reuters notes that he made that donation when he was 17.

The 2024 election would have been the first presidential election that Crooks would be eligible to vote.

As ABC News states, the suspected shooter is believe to be a “lone wolf.”

How did the shooting happen?

As the report from ABC News explains, “The gunman opened fire with a rifle from the roof of a building about 200 to 300 yards away from the stage where Trump was speaking. A U.S. Secret Service counter-sniper team immediately killed the individual.”

The building is said to be one-story and eyewitnesses have reported seeing a man climb to the top of the roof with a rifle and attempted to warn security about him before the shooting.

Though other reports (including one from TMZ) had initially stated that Trump was not actually shot and he was bleeding due to glass from a teleprompter, Reuters says that he “was shot in the ear.”

So, it’s unclear how the confrontation started, but the video begins with the Black man who recorded the video — @slimgrim67 on Instagram — sitting in his car in a McDonald’s parking lot warning an unhinged white woman to get away from his vehicle as McKaren comes charging towards him.

“Come on…,” the white woman shouts before making sure he knows off-rip that she’s racist by calling him, “Boy!”

“Get out of your car, boy—SON!” she continued. (I’m not sure what the deal was with that “son” remark. Maybe she’s a middle-aged white woman who identifies as a ’90s New York rapper? IDK.)

As the woman starts walking back to her car, the man recording quietly says, “Go somewhere, crazy,” causing Karen to spin back around and sprint-walk towards him again, saying, “No, I’m not crazy, get out of your car now. Yeah, eating your McDonald’s. Get out of your car now, asshole!”

Again, she starts to walk away when the Black guy calmly says, “Get your order straight, which might indicate that this whole thing began when a McDonald’s worker got something wrong on her order causing her to go full Karen on everyone in sight.

“Come on! Come on, now! I’m so ready to Fight Club this sh*t,” Karen says before calling the cameraman a “p*ssy” several times for continuing to refuse to exit the car.

An appeals court has reversed its decision to convict Robert Olsen, the former DeKalb County, Georgia officer who fatally shot a Black veteran nine years ago, according to reports.

Olsen opened fire at 26-year-old Anthony Hill, whose family said suffered from mental health disorders, on March 9, 2015. The ex-officer responded to a call about a naked man exhibiting “odd” behavior outside of an apartment complex in the area.

The Associated Press reported that the apartment management called police several times about Hill’s actions. The 911 dispatcher informed Olsen that a “possibly demented” man was at the scene.

Bystanders said Hill was “squatting” outside when Olsen finally arrived, per the outlet. The victim then started to run in Olsen’s direction, and the officer ordered him to “stop.” When Hill failed to comply, Olsen fired his struck two times. During the trial, Olsen argued that he was acting in self-defense.

In 2019, Olsen was cleared of two counts of felony murder but was convicted of making a false statement, aggravated assault, and two counts of violation of oath, Fox 5 reported. He was handed down a 20-year sentence and ordered to serve 12 years.

“It just brings back the feelings of losing Tony, like pulling off a scab of a wound you just won’t let heal,” Hill’s sister, Tamara Giummo, said during an interview with local news referring to the new ruling.

An extremely graphic and disturbing clip has been circulating on social media of a Missouri student repeatedly punching her 65-year-old teacher during a violent hallway exchange. It happened at Normandy High School classroom on Wednesday.

The teacher was hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery. The video has been seen almost 17 million times on X. Of course, the kids heard screaming in the video looked on and simply recorded the incident instead of intervening or finding help.

A second clip showed the same student involved in the fight having a seizure moments later. According to students, the brawl began when the teacher attempted to prevent the girl from going to her locker to retrieve seizure medication.

The teacher’s partner, Greg Stanton, said that she had idea why she was attacked. “She’s banged up pretty bad,” Stanton stated in reference to his hospital visit. “She really couldn’t talk. She [doesn’t] understand why” she was attacked, he said. “She was crying. “Where were the police? Where were the (paraprofessionals)?”

Candace Owens lost support from a group that helped launch her career bashing Black people after her comments about the Israel-Gaza War received a rebuke from David Horowitz, the founder of the conservative anti-Islam group David Horowitz Freedom Center.

Horowitz wrote a statement published by Front Page Magazine accusing Owens of comparing Israel to the South during segregation and implying that the Israeli government was committing genocide against Palestinians. He also condemned Black Lives Matter for what he calls ignorant “Apartheid State” slander.

Horowitz stated he discovered Owens on YouTube before she became a national figure after meeting Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at a DHFC event. The 84-year-old continued by saying he now is “so disappointed in what she has become.”

The conservative went on to condemn Owens for giving a platform to “anti-Israel voices like Andrew Tate” and accuse her of promoting “Hamas’ genocidal lies.”

“For example, she has falsely compared Israel to the ‘segregated South.’ This is the sort of ignorant ‘Apartheid State’ slander that we expect from Black Lives Matter – and the Jew-killers of the Middle East,” he wrote. “When Candace implied that Israel was engaged in ‘genocide’ for defending itself against the atrocities committed by Hamas, that’s the kind of genocidal lie we expect to hear from Hamas.”

Horowitz added that Owens, who remains a commentator for The Daily Wire, a conservative media magazine founded by Ben Shapiro, was “obsessed with her own fame” and playing “the victim” for financial gain and publicity.

“Candace Owens has become obsessed with her own fame, stirring up drama to compensate for a lack of real achievement,” he continued. “Her comments about Israel and her promotion of people like Andrew Tate are part of a pattern. Candace tackles a subject she knows nothing about, never bothers to learn anything about it, and then rides the backlash by playing the victim to generate more fame and money.”

As social media continues to react to the infamous Montgomery brawl that happened over the weekend, Black folks have been the most boisterous when it comes to the commentary surrounding it. From Black Panther comparisons to dubbing the fight Riverboat Wrestlemania, the jokes have seemingly been endless. Interestingly enough, the remarks happen to be rooted in humor that stems from a deeper and far more complex place.

And sadly, it’s a place that Black folks are all too familiar with. The fight started when a group of white men assaulted a lone Black dock worker who was doing his job by asking the group to move their pontoon boat (the boat was blocking a riverboat from docking). The response from the white men was one that kept in line with American history—to brutalize a Black person when they felt inconvenienced by them.

Racist violence against Black people has been always been made a public spectacle. After the Civil War, photographs of lynchings were published as postcards featuring racist text until it was banned by the United States Postal Service in 1908. That practice has been barbarically reincarnated as Black people being killed on video, with the footage being replayed on the internet.

Justice for us is a rarity and often when we try to achieve it, we are victim-blamed and held responsible for our own demise. What we saw in Montgomery was not just an incredible show of unity amongst Black people, but the opposite of what we are used to seeing. This time when a Black man was being attacked by white people, he—and folks who stepped in on his behalf—fought back.

This is vital in both a broader historical context as well as a more localized one. As Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones pointed out: “If you understand the history of Montgomery — one of the most prolific slave-trading cities in the U.S. turned brutally repressive apartheid regime after, and majority Black but JUST got its first Black mayor — it gives so much more perspective to this video.”

A resurfaced photo of an older white man painting a biracial toddler’s toenails has spurred a lengthy tread of debate on X, formerly known as Twitter.

An account named Call To Activism shared the photo on July 27 with the caption: “My dad didn’t approve when l married a dark skin man. He’s some kind of a racist hillbilly. When l was pregnant he told me he didn’t want anything to do with my biracial daughter. Here, he is painting her toenails on her 3rd birthday.”

Here’s proof people can change.

It is unclear where the photo originated, but another X user pointed out that it was shared on Reddit at least seven years ago. The X post has been viewed over 13 million times on the platform.

While it received some warm responses from some viewers who thought the photo was touching, some argued that ridding someone of racism is not as simple as getting them to love a “dark-skinned” grandchild.

“Him painting his granddaughters nails does not mean he’s not a racist anymore,” wrote Diane Lewis, who faced criticism for her comment.

“Really? So you’re one of those that thinks once a racist always a racist? Sounds like a big time virtue signal to me,” one user said in a reply to Lewis.

“No I’m one of those that knows that a racist may have legitimate feelings for their offspring but that doesn’t erase their racist views,” Lewis argued.

The phenomenon that Lewis and others wrapped in the discussion is referring to is when a person believes that people from a particular racial group possess certain negative traits or characteristics but makes an exception for one person because of their personal connection. It also speaks to the belief that colorblindness promotes racial harmony, according to social psychologists.

A road rage incident quickly escalated into a dangerous ordeal for a Black Texas woman who felt threatened after a man followed her to a gas station, pointed a gun at her, rear-ended her car and called her racial slurs.

Surveillance video captured 30-year-old Kevin Roth following a woman into a gas station convenience store in Harris County, Texas, while aiming a handgun at her.

Local station ABC 13 Houston spoke exclusively with the victim, who chose not to release her identity. She said she was in her car sitting at a red light. Roth was right behind her in his vehicle. When the light turned green, Roth honked at her. She honked back, and that’s when she saw him pull out his gun while he was driving. He rear-ended her too then began following her.

She told ABC 13 that’s when she “took off” and sped to a “gas station in a public area.”

“I had already seen that gun in the car. So I didn’t want to just pull over like a regular car accident,” the victim said.

She pulled into a Phillips 66 gas station, got out of her car and ran into the store. Surveillance video shows Roth closely following the woman and pointing the gun right at her back.

Even when she tried to leave the store, Roth followed her out and tried to take the keys out of her car. Then she says he got back in his car and hit her car again, presumably to keep her from leaving the station. The woman said Roth then started shouting racial slurs at her.

“I honestly didn’t think he would pull a gun out in public and chase me. He was like, ‘Get on the ground right now!’ He could have shot me. He was aiming a gun. I could tell he was kind of scared himself,” the victim said. “He was shaking his hand. That’s why I was scared. ‘I’m scared because you’re scared.’ He could have done anything to me just out of fear,” she said.

Deputies arrived at the station soon afterward, and confiscated the gun. They arrested Roth and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“My heart was just racing. When the police got there, I was just like in tears,” the alleged victim said.

Roth was later released on a $25,000 bond. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said he hadn’t been charged with any prior offenses, other than minor traffic violations.
