At a recent Harlem Row Fashion event, supermodel Naomi Campbell found herself in the spotlight for more than just her runway prowess. During the event, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour presented Campbell with an award, but not without a remark that raised eyebrows. Wintour began her speech by saying, “I am a very punctual person, and I have the honor of presenting tonight to someone who is often late.” The comment, aimed at Campbell, quickly went viral, with many perceiving it as a thinly veiled jab. Although the supermodel wasn’t present at the time of the remark, the exchange set off a flurry of online chatter.

Wintour’s speech continued with praise, acknowledging Campbell’s fearless advocacy for equality throughout her career. “Naomi is honestly one of the most fearless people I know… she began to speak the truth about inequality and injustice when it was not so common to do so,” Wintour said. However, any further interaction between the two powerhouses was cut short when Wintour left the event before Campbell’s arrival, reportedly due to other commitments. Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Samira Nasr ultimately presented the Fashion Icon Award to Campbell, who later took the stage with her own brand of sharp wit.

In her acceptance speech, Campbell graciously thanked Wintour for attending, while also subtly addressing the editor’s earlier comment. “Everything’s meant to work out the way it’s meant to work out,” Campbell said, adding, “I’d much rather have this.” The model, known for her unapologetic attitude, remarked on her commitment to speaking the truth, acknowledging both the professional support Wintour had offered her over the years and the complex dynamics of their relationship. Social media lit up following the exchange, with fans celebrating Campbell’s “legendary” clapback while reigniting discussions about Wintour’s fraught history with diversity in the fashion industry.

Jill Scott’s Blues Babe Foundation celebrates 16 years helping youth make dreams come true, showing kids more so they want more!

Special to the NNPA

By Steven N. Larkin

On a cool star stoddard evening, the Arden Theater Company, one of Philadelphia’s premier theaters, hosted the Blues Babe 16st Foundation Anniversary.  The Blues Babe Foundations (BBF) is the brainchild of soulful sultry (sensuous)  singer and poet, Jill Scott and her inspiration to help young children make dreams happen through education and the arts.

The evening began with a lobby full of Ms. Scott’s colleagues, the Board of Directors for Blues Babe, kids and many of the students who have received scholarships along with many who attended Camp Jill Scott through the years were all smiling, bubbly and full of joy in North Philadelphia!  To say the atmosphere was festive would be a huge understatement!  Not that anyone was hungry but the food catered by Edible Delights was the mostess: roast beef, salad with banana peppers along with lots of green stuff was scrupulous!  Just picture the lobby full of an array of beautiful people looking like a rainbow with a complete mixture of good-looking ladies, dapper men dressed to impress and of course a host of the young kids, who Ms. Scott has inspired to live their lives to the fullest! Education is the key.

We talked with Brandon Parker one of the kids, who has been inspired and a member of Camp Jill Scott. The 7th grader, how by the way is going to be a Biomedical Engineer, shared the help that the BBF provides the kids is invaluable!   She along with her girlfriend Londyn Haywood, look forward to laughing and learning all they can throughout the year in class and especially, when they go to Camp Jill Scott!

A packed group of supporters then entered the auditorium to learn more about the Blues Babe Foundation as Dr. Val Gay, member of the Board of Directors, who happens to be a classically trained soprano, came on stage sharing with the audience all of the dynamic things the foundation has been doing for underserved children in the Philadelphia and Camden area that begin from grades 4th through 7th.  She went on to share the foundation keeps track of the participants all the way through High School. Another member of the BBF Board of Directors, Branden Pankey, Vice President Live Nation Urban, then came on to discuss how the BBF is sensitive to the needs of the community and how thankful they are for the community along with the  corporate supporters including the fantastic work that along with the financial resources, Pepsco, has provided.

BBF Director, Ms. Aisha Winfield, then came on to expound on how meaningful the work that they do is to make a difference in young people’s lives. Since 2008, the foundation has provided over 300 kids a week of pure fun at Camp Jill Scott! They swim, race, basketball / volleyball where they play hard, laugh and just have fun! The main focus of the BBF is to help young children develop strong learning skills, provide financial help for them to continue their education and not be stalled for a lack of funding,

Of course, the highlight of the evening was Jill Scott and her band! Jilly from Philly was in the house! She simply walked in with her beaming smile and begin to do her thang!  Singing ….Is it the Way…the crowd went to a whole brand new level, with a soulful clap!  Following up with I am living my life like it’s Golden! She then went on to thank all of her supporters and the difference that they make by providing resources and support to help the kids continue their education.  She also went on to share with the audience that she faced so many obstacles while attending college and simply trying to live! That experience created a movement in her soul to help young people, thus she created the BBF.

In this short journey we call life; The Blues Babe Foundation is, indeed, The Real Thing!

If you have an opportunity to donate and support the Blues Babe Foundation, it would be very much appreciated and wonderful! And by the way, you can make a meaningful difference by investing in our community and all of the kids would smile moreover do something more with their lives!  For more information, please visit www.bluesbabefoundation.com

Each Summer, her Blue Babe Foundation provides an annual week long summer get right camp for under-served 4th-7th graders. The camp is located on a 30 acre spread when the kids aren’t in the pool, bvolley ball and basketball courts  would you believe that they actually sit outside on lbleachers  to learn the basics of math, science, arts, technology and engineering.

According to The TelegraphMac Ellison, a pastor in DeKalb County, found his wife, Lashunda Heath-Ellison, with a headshot wound when he woke up during the night last week. The pastor announced on his Facebook page that LaShunda passed away on Monday, Oct. 10.

“My wife Lashunda Heath-Ellison gained her wings. I believe to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Please give us a moment to process this. My Perfect Angel is gone but forever in our hearts.”

Ellison, who is a pastor at Temple of Faith Ministries, posted a video on Facebook Live on Oct. 9 stating that his wife was hit in the back of her head as she slept last week on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The incident occurred at the couple’s Decatur, Georgia residence.

‘She’s Got Stardust All Over Her’: Aretha Franklin’s Granddaughter Grace Franklin Auditions for ‘American Idol’ https://philadelphiaobserver.com/shes-got-stardust-all-over-her-aretha-franklins-granddaughter-grace-franklin-auditions-for-american-idol/ Mon, 07 Mar 2022 17:23:18 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3507 Grace Franklin, music legend Aretha Franklin‘s 15 year-old granddaughter, auditioned for “American Idol” to fiercely debating trio of judges.

Grace came up to perform and fully disclosed that she was Franklin’s granddaughter. She explained that she often traveled with Franklin when she was little but didn’t fully grasp just how famous she was. To her, “she was always just Grandma.”

After performing “Killing Me Softly” and her grandmother’s “Ain’t No Way,” judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie debated which route Grace should go in. Richie said, “I’m gonna talk to you now as Uncle Richie and your grandmother talkin’ to me. Her line was, ‘If you’re not ready for me, baby, don’t come near me.’ What we need is time and work to get it up to par.”

Perry suggested they vote. Luke Bryan gave his vote first, which was a “no.” Perry said, “Grace, I think you have stardust and sparkle all over you. You are beautiful and if you’ll trust us, if you’ll listen to us and you put in the work, I think we can find that next level with you. You’re a ‘yes’ from me.”

When it was Richie’s turn, he said, “Grace Franklin, I love you. And I think the best thing for you in life is to take a shot at going backwards. Go back and get a running start and come back at this again.”

As he gave his vote of “no,” Perry stared at him in shock.

Richie said, “Are you putting pressure on me?” To which Perry exclaimed, “Listen, she’s got stardust! Give her a shot! Give her a chance! I’m sure Aretha wasn’t Aretha when she first walked into the room, but someone said, ‘Yes, I wanna work with you. I wanna develop you. You’ve got somethin’. She’s got stardust on her!”

Kerry Washington Honors Black Women In History With Instagram Photo Series https://philadelphiaobserver.com/kerry-washington-honors-black-women-in-history-with-instagram-photo-series/ Mon, 28 Feb 2022 19:04:12 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3490

As Black History Month comes to a close, actress Kerry Washington is rounding out her month-long series of image recreations of iconic Black women in history. Thus far, there have been three posted under her hashtag in use, #BlackHERstory. The first she posted on Instagram was in honor of fashion maven and entrepreneur, Beverly Johnson. Washington posed in a yellow dress with a 70s style blowout, and in the second image within the carousel, converted the shot to black and white and featured it alongside a picture of Beverly Johnson herself.

“I want to celebrate and honor Black HERstory and embody my sisters who have paved the way for putting magic into the world. First up, is model, actress, singer, advocate, business woman and all around goddess – Beverly Johnson. She was the first Black woman to be on the cover of Vogue Magazine in 1974 (swipe to see!),” she captioned the carousel posted on February 7th.”

Next up was her depiction of Olympian Wilma Rudolph. Washington sports Rudolph’s signature short crop with a wig, a USA athletic fleece, and a gold medal around her neck, symbolizing just one of “The Black Gazelle’s” three.

“YEP. She wasn’t the first Black athlete or the first female athlete to win three gold medals,” Kerry wrote. “She was the first ATHLETE. Wilma ran (literally!) so that Black athletes and Olympians could run too. And show the world our magic, our talents, and our determination. Thank you Wilma!!!!!”

In what just may be the final installation in the actress’ Instagram installation, Washington honored none other than civil rights legend Rosa Parks, in what looks like her most elaborate costume yet. The Emmy award winner wears a plaid blazer, glasses, and an iteration of a dutch braid in the same style Rosa Parks was photographed in in her 1955 mugshot.

Awkwafina Quits Twitter After Suspect Blaccent Non-Apology, Slander Continues https://philadelphiaobserver.com/awkwafina-quits-twitter-after-suspect-blaccent-non-apology-slander-continues/ Mon, 14 Feb 2022 16:12:48 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3426 Today (Feb. 5), Asian-American actress Awkwafina took to Twitter to reveal she would be quitting the social media app at the behest of her therapist. But before that, she offered up what’s widely considered a non-apology for her much-maligned use of a “blaccent,” before making her exit.

Most everybody except her fiercest fans are calling her out for her far too late mea culpa and dramatic exit.

Born Nora Lum, the Queens native copped pleas, years after the fact. After years of what many consider the mocking of Black culture via her liberal use of African-American vernacular English (AAVE), she offered up some quaint words of explanation, including her love of Hip-Hop and where she grew up.

“As a non-Black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backwards toward the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group,” tweeted the Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings star in a lengthy statement.

She added, “But I must emphasize: to mock, belittle or to be unkind in any way possible at the expense of others is: Simply. Not. My. Nature. It never has, and it never was.”

Mind you, she never actually addresses or apologizes for her use of AAVE, a blaccent, or whatever you choose to called it. But later in her statement, she chalked up to where she grew up, and Hip-Hop.

“I think as a group, Asian Americans are still trying to figure out what that journey means for them, what is correct and where they don’t belong,” she continued, “And though I’m still learning and doing that personal work, I know for sure that I want to spend the rest of my career doing nothing but lifting our communities. We do the first by failing, learning, acknowledging, hearing and empathizing and I will continue tirelessly to do just that.”

Adidas Partners to Inspire Students from Marginalized Communities https://philadelphiaobserver.com/adidas-partners-to-inspire-students-from-marginalized-communities/ Sat, 05 Feb 2022 13:53:00 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3423

Today’s students are imagining a world and career path far beyond what traditional systems are set up to provide. Design and creative hobbies have become more than just that – they are an opportunity for youth to explore a future that can become a career. Today, adidas is proud to support the Iovine and Young Academy and PENSOLE founder Dr. D’Wayne Edwards in an expanded partnership to create opportunities for students to embrace creativity and see expanded possibilities for their future.

“This partnership marks an ongoing chapter to offer the next generation of creative thinkers and dreamers the skills to shape the future of design. Despite someone’s background or economic standing, kids bold enough to dream big should be provided with equitable access to education,” said Edwards, PENSOLE founder. PENSOLE was established in 2010 by Edwards to give talented young design students — regardless of socioeconomic background — an opportunity to learn from the industry’s best, according to a press release.

This past fall, in partnership with the USC Iovine and Young Academy, students participated in a series of “Wood U” workshops, working with adidas and Inglewood native, D Smoke to design an apparel and footwear line driven by longevity, ambition, power and love, that will launch in select LA stores on Feb. 7.

The Iovine and Young Academy was founded by Jimmy Iovine and Andre “Dr. Dre” Young in 2013 to give young, creative disruptors the tools and inspiration to develop as leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs. In partnership with Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will launch a new high school, currently known as Regional High School #1, whose curriculum will build on the Academy’s unique approach that combines design, business, and technology with hands-on, real-world learning. Together with adidas and PENSOLE, the partnership will give young students of color who are passionate about design unparalleled access to future careers and opportunities.

Jessica Moss Connects Artists and Community in North Carolina with Artist Residency, The Roll Up CLT https://philadelphiaobserver.com/jessica-moss-connects-artists-and-community-in-north-carolina-with-artist-residency-the-roll-up-clt/ Sat, 22 Jan 2022 13:44:24 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3344

My first memory of time spent at The Roll Up CLT shakes out to become clearer like a polaroid capture. Through the haze of late summer on southern porches, I recall a curated kinship, community, and a shared love of Black art in close space. In the passing of wine poured into red solo cups, I was introduced to the petite powerhouse known as Jessica Gaynelle Moss. While most galleries, institutions, curators and collectors remain committed to supporting the work of white male artists, others like Moss are taking it upon themselves to advocate for the Black creatives, who without aid, may never reach their full potential.

Moss is an artist, Black art advocate, and purveyor of potential. According to her bio, she is considered to be a “creator of platforms and spaces that invest in the historically excluded.” One such platform is that of her Charlotte, North Carolina based artist residency, The Roll Up CLT.

“Investing in my own community, watering my seeds in the places they were planted and vesting my interests in the neighborhoods that I came from, and that I call home.” Moss shared.

General Charles McGee, Decorated Tuskegee Airman, Has Died At 102

She dedicated a year to rehabbing a vacant property in the historically Black neighborhood of Camp Greene, and with the help of a $53,000 grant from The Knight Foundation, she was able to roll up it’s garage doors to its first resident, Zun Lee, in 2018.

Lee, who Moss had become acquainted with during an artist retreat in Chicago, is a critically acclaimed photographer best known for his photo essay “Father Figure”, documenting Black fathers and their children throughout Harlem and The Bronx. While Lee’s work is known worldwide, other artists of color are more in need of the type of backing and assistance that Moss and her program provide.

As reported by popular online portal Black Art in America, “Many collectors and curators make acquisition and exhibition decisions based on what’s on an artist’s CV.” Their participation and attendance of a prestigious art residency such as the Oxbow or the Whitney Independent Study Program is enough to launch a career.

Unfortunately for most artists of African descent, opportunities for residencies are sparse. The Roll Up CLT aims to level the playing field for Black artists who require this same type of launching pad. Participation in the program can last anywhere from 6 to 8 months. Artists are provided housing, access to transportation, and an unrestricted honorarium to provide food and supplies.
