The World Famous Apollo Theater in Harlem is known for featuring some of the most popular music acts in the recording industry. That was far from the case Monday afternoon when it held a boxing press conference featuring one of the most exciting and popular heavyweight fighters in boxing history and a guy who is arguably the most popular You Tube internet sensation. Mike Tyson who became the youngest heavyweight to win a title will step into the ring against Jake Paul Saturday, July 20th. The fight will take place at in Dallas Texas’ AT&T Stadium home of the Dallas Cowboys also known affectionately as “Jerry’s World” owned by Jerry Jones. The fight will be televised free for Netflix subscribers.
Tyson, 58 years old last fought in 2020 when he won a split decision over Roy Jones. Paul, 27 years old, has fought 10 times, winning 9 against fighters who have never been ranked. His 1 loss came at the hands of Tommy Fury in an 8 round split decision in February 2023.
This press conference was mild compared to the infamous Tyson past press conferences. Both fighters praised each other and both predicted the fight will include knockdowns. There were no verbal attacks. In fact, at one point, Tyson was smiling when they did the customary facedown.
The fight is scheduled for 8, 2-minute rounds with pillow like gloves that will weigh .14 ounces. Reports say that Tyson will earn upwards of $20 million. It was not disclosed how much Paul will earn.
