Harry Robinson – A Life Well Lived

Photo: Special to the NY Beacon

By Andrew Rosario

Prior to the Knicks game Monday night, the organization announced that they lost a valuable member of their family. Long time statistician for the Knicks radio broadcast, Harry Robinson passed away at the age of 82. Long before joining the Knicks, Harry established himself growing up in Montclair, New Jersey. He grew up on Pleasant Way and attended the Montclair public school system. After graduating as part of the 1960 class, he enrolled at Rutgers University and after graduating broke barriers becoming the first black sportswriter and later the Scholastic Sports Editor for the Newark Evening News. Along with position with the Knicks, Harry would travel to nearby cities to cover games. He was also hired by the NCAA to cover college games.

On a personal note, l first met Harry in 1998 when l was assigned to cover the team for the New York Beacon. Walking into the press room, Harry was the only person of color which made me feel a little uncomfortable. I sat across the table from him and he immediately extended his hand, introducing himself. It was the start of a great friendship. I looked forward to seeing him and noticed how he would prepare for the upcoming games. Harry had folders and different colored magic markers as he would write down the names of the players on both teams.

Harry also had a great sense of humor and a very infectious laugh. His wide smile lit up a room. Knowing that my spanish was limited, Harry would tease me speaking his limited spanish. He often called me “Guapo” (handsome) or “Mi Gente” (my people). Knowing that l traveled to South Beach Miami often, Harry made it clear. “You better bring me pics of the women on the beach. Especially, the ones in thongs.” I obliged him and chuckled when l showed him the pics. His smile said it all.

Harry Robinson was truly one of a kind. There was no grey area with Harry. He told it as he saw it with no apologies. He treated everyone the same no matter of their status. I am so privileged to have known Harry. The outpouring and tributes for Harry continue to come in. Harry Robinson, a life well lived!

Harry Robinson is survived by his wife Denise, daughter Beth and son Chris, Adam and grandchildren Jaiden, Olivia and nephews/adopted son Tom and Neal Robinson.

Rest in Peace, Sleep in Peace Harry Robinson.
