On Saturday, an 8-year-old girl was shot in the head while petting horses outside her Augusta home, resulting in a search for suspects accused in the fatal shooting.

Officials say three suspects were arrested in the homicide investigation, according to WRDW News.

Arbrie Leigh Anthony, an honor-roll student at Jenkins-White Elementary School, visited her aunt’s house that day and was pronounced dead that evening at a local hospital.

Local authorities have said that two suspects drove by in a red or orange Jeep Compass. As many as 10 shots were fired outside the young’s girl’s apartment building, an area where neighbors usually kept horses for kids to pet. One of the horses was also killed in the shooting.

“We are following up on every lead that comes in, but I cannot and will not accept the fact that no one knows who these suspects are,” Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree told reporters at a news conference Monday. “There are individuals in this community that knew why they were there, knew what they were there for, and knew who they were after, but yet they’ve failed to come forward with this information.”“All acts of violence involving gunfire are senseless, but when it comes to a child, we take that one personally,” Roundtree said, calling the gunmen “cowards.”

Meanwhile, Anthony’s family is devastated by losing their young beloved’s life. Her aunt, Jamila McDaniel, described her niece as charismatic and energetic. She shared with the Augusta Chronicle her niece’s love for traveling and TikTok.

“It was just a normal Saturday, a normal day. She loved to play outside,” McDaniel told The Augusta Chronicle, recalling the time she spent with her niece just hours before the shooting. “I’m just not understanding why someone would do something like that.”

Northam to remove Lee statue pedestal, transfer land to city http://philadelphiaobserver.com/northam-to-remove-lee-statue-pedestal-transfer-land-to-city/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 19:42:30 +0000 https://philadelphiaobserver.com/?p=3150

The Lee statue was one of five enormous Confederate tributes along Richmond’s Monument Avenue

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced Sunday that his administration will remove an enormous pedestal that until earlier this year held a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond.

The announcement marks a reversal in course from September, when the statue was removed but the Democratic governor said the 40-foot-tall (12-meter-tall) pedestal, currently covered in graffiti, would stay.

What‘s going on

His administration also announced plans to transfer ownership of the grassy island in the middle of a traffic circle where the statue was located to the city of Richmond. The move comes about a month before Northam leaves office and Republican Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin, who has expressed less enthusiasm about the statue’s removal, is sworn in.

“It was important to us that we do it now and before we leave office,” said Alena Yarmosky, Northam’s spokeswoman.

The deeding of the land, which was given to the commonwealth in the 19th century, was a request from the city so that the parcel could come under local control, Yarmosky said. State ownership has created logistical headaches with maintenance and security, she said.

The University of Richmond has become the latest institution of education that has faced backlash for a racist atmosphere. According to WRIC, police say they’re investigating three incidents that occurred on campus late last week.

The university’s freshman class president, Gabriella Armon-Wickers said she awakened Friday morning to find the N-word written on her name tag outside her dorm room door. Meanwhile, two other students reportedly had racial slurs on their name tags, one with the message “Terry=/president,” or in other words, “terrorists does not equal president.” The other student’s name tag had the derogatory “Paki” written on it. The campus police said two of the incidents occurred at Marsh Hall whereas the third incident hasn’t been tied to a location yet. They said they would be increasing their presence at Marsh Hall to deter students from committing “these types of incidents in which a hate crime can occur when certain criminal offenses.”

The University of Richmond president, Ronald A. Crutcher, also addressed students in an email, calling the incidents “cowardly” and “racist.”
